5. A CELEBRATION OF ENGLISH ECCENTRICITY
FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS, CLIFFORD UPTON HAS CREATED ARTWORKS OUT OF PUMPKINS AT HIS HOME IN
THE SLEEPY WEST SUSSEX VILLAGE OF SLINDON. THE SLINDON PUMPKIN FESTIVAL, AS IT HAS BECOME
KNOWN, DRAWS THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EACH YEAR WHO COME TO ADMIRE WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED
WITH A LITTLE IMAGINATION AND A LOT OF PUMPKINS. NOT SURPRISINGLY, SLINDON IS KNOWN AS THE
PUMPKIN CAPITAL OF BRITAIN. SADLY, CLIFFORD DIED IN JUNE AGED 87. HOWEVER, THIS YEAR, TONY
SMITH HAS REWORKED ONE OF HIS FAVOURITES, 2002’S ‘SUNFLOWERS AND BUTTERFLIES’ USING MORE
THAN 500 PIECES OF FRUIT!
