2. SUSTAINABLE FOOD FOR CITIES
 Is not recognised in OECD countries as participating on food
security issue (vs Global South)
 Is not recognised as a global political challenge for the
world and our society (as climate change e.i.)
 Is not really recongised yet as an urban sustainability issue
with a legitimacy for the city to act on
 Is not seen as a priority criteria for land planing

3. SITUATION – LOCAL LEVEL

 Sustainable food/food governance not a local political priority
 Local actions, global approach rare - Short distribution chains,
organic food, community gardens, roof-top gardening
 Difference between speech and action
 Low expertise of the agri-food reality of the territory
 Lack of dedicated tools to better understand and accompany
territorial transition
 Agriculture-oriented region is a facilitating factor
 Sustainable food as a part of a global urban sustainability?

5. DESIGN ALTERNATIVES TO CURRENT URBAN FOOD SYSTEMS
City-region level seems relevant

6. WHAT IS NEEDED TO STRENGTHEN CITY-REGION
 Mainstreaming city region food systems in relation to food and
nutrition security policy and action at all levels from local to global
 Reinforcing the awareness of the metabolism of flows and links
between rural and urban areas
 Engaging stakeholders through transparent multi-level
governance for city-regions

7. WHAT IS NEEDED TO STRENGTHEN CITY-REGION
 Supporting local authorities and local decision-makers in:
 Food-centred urban and regional planning
 Enabling and supporting local sustainable food production
 Support for a human-rights based and systemic approach to city
region food systems
 Participatory governance and capacity building
 On international level, the platform shall help to contribute, alongside
partner organizations, to make the issue rise on the political agenda.
