What kind of institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
The companies that made my film are independent. In
our pitch we decided to use real independent
companies at first but later on our teacher informed us
that we would get more marks if we used our own
company and distribution names so we used our
imagination and came up with two names for the
production and distribution companies.
Before we actually came up with the names, we briefly
researched companies that produce and distribute
horror/slasher films. Some names that grabbed our
attention were : Hammer Pictures, Fear Driven Films,
Hellfire Pictures, Bender Spink and Blumhouse
Pictures.
These are the names that we came up
with : Omninous Eye Productions and
SimEX Films. Below are the logos of my
production and distribution companies.
 Mainstream and independent title sequences differ quite a
lot. Mainstream has enough money, in this case budget, to
do a good stylised title and distribute the product. Besides
the budget, they have a vertical integration, which is very
favorable because the money will always go back and it is
very easy to distribute the product. Whereas, independent
companies have a horizontal integration. To distribute an
independent film, you need to employ an independent
distributor. Due to a very low budget they are not able to
create extensive marketing unlike mainstream companies.
Independent films are often distributed through social media
because it’s free and also because most youth drama films
focus on the “youth of these days”.
Social media is one of the keys to target the youth through:
Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+, Rotten
Tomatoes, trailers, websites. Therefore it has a limited
distribution. Mainstream companies are able to distribute
through social media which is the new digital media and at
the same time distribute the product through old traditional
media like billboards and posters. This targets the audience
in a more effective way; you are not only persuading your
target audience but you’re also gaining a wider audience.
Mainstream companies are able to screen their product in
several cinemas around the world, whereas independent
films are usually only screened in some, even few, cinemas
nationally. Some screen their films in other countries.
My title sequence was screened at Screen on the Green,
an independent cinema, in Angel. It was also digitally
distributed through Vimeo.
