I c ompletely avoid Bridge Square for the Saturday market fairs bec ause the parking is too far away.
It isn't bec ause I c an't walk, but bec ause I am a busy person. These events keep me out of the
entire downtown as well. I oc c asional attend c ultural events on Bridge Square and usually enjoy
them.

The Saturday morning arts and foods bizarre is a nic e event, but lac ks energy throughout the year.
The same vendors are selling the same items every week, whic h disc ourages repeat visits from
loc al residents and there isn't enough advertising to attrac t residents from other c ommunities.
There should be more reasons to keep loc als c oming bac k week after week.

The Bridge Square events have taken a toll on Bridge Square. There should be an investment in
the spring to c lean up, add some good dark soil, and some sod. The grass c urrently looks VERY

the wrong time of the year.

Northfield needs the type of events that happen on Bridge Square. They are an integral part of
bringing a larger audienc e into the c ity.
12/20/2013 11:23 AM
2

This is one aspec t of Northfield that makes Northfield a spec ial plac e for my family and I. I think
about neighboring towns suc h as Farmington, Faribault, Owatonna, etc ., and they don't have
nearly the frequenc y and variety of events downtown, in a public square, along the river as
Northfield does. The more we enhanc e this spac e and the frequenc y of its use for
public /c ommunity events the more benefic ial it bec omes for our c ommunity.
12/19/2013 1:51 PM

I imagine these events bring people into the downtown vic inity to shop, buy food & beverage, etc .
as well as partaking in whatever events. This would inc lude both Northfielders and out-of-towners-and obviously the bigger events bring in more folks for even better business!
12/10/2013 9:26 AM
9
There are multiple loc ations throughout Northfield that serve the c ommunity need for a public
gathering spac e, but Bridge Square provides additional vibranc y due to the downtown c ommerc ial
businesses and higher density. Bridge Square benefits from the attendanc e of passers by or
members of the c ommunity inc orporating an event in Bridge Square with their other daily duties.
12/9/2013 12:10 PM

12/7/2013 1:29 PM

What does "helpful" mean? Are you asking about whether Bridge Square events attrac t tourists? If

"c ommerc ial" is a loaded term. Do you mean things like a farmer's market or the DJJD food booths.
They're okay by me. Do you mean permanent c ommerc ial interests? No, that's where the people

Perhaps not "surprisingly" similar, but yes, I think ac ross Northfield's history, from what I understand
it seems that Bridge Square has played an important role in the c ommunity to be ac c essible for all,

Early photos of the Bridge Square area showed it to be a major c rossroad, whic h was an asset to

It is a nic e addition tot he Square but I don't think Northfield would fall apart if the wagon were to

The popc orn wagon has been there sinc e I was a c hild. Bridge Square would not be the same

It's good to have the memorial somewhere. I'm not sure if it needs to be on Bridge Square.

2
Not many c ommunities are old enough to have one.
12/20/2013 9:41 AM
3
I don't know how long it's been there, but seems to be well established. I see no reason to remove it.
12/20/2013 9:18 AM

It's a part of the historic c harm and gives Bridge Square a sense of c ontinuity over the years.
12/20/2013 8:49 AM

Maybe it c ould be moved to a less c entral spot in the square to allow for better movement, etc .
12/20/2013 7:25 AM

I'd prefer it be reloc ated.
12/19/2013 4:51 PM

This is our heritage. I like the historioc ity of it. And how would Oles and Carls c elebrate their wins
over eac h other without it? However if it c ould be moved to a different loc ation in downtown that
might be okay.
12/11/2013 12:58 PM
13
I think that having "bits of history," and Northfield history spec ific ally, reflec ted in Bridge Square is
important. The Civil War Memorial definitely qualifies! However, I also think that it might be either
inc orporated into the square in a different way, or again if logistic ally or aesthetic ally it makes
sense to move it to say, Riverside park with the Veterans memorial, I think that would be amenable!
One other idea is that sometimes the square feels a little "exposed"--the open spac e c reating a kind
of "fishbowl" affec t. Perhaps using the CW Memorial, benc hes or other seating, and planting shrubs
or trees, one c ould c reate some more "private" or "c ozy" areas within the square as well as some
openness. (Of c ourse on the other hand it is really nic e to have those nic e open views--perhaps
there's a happy-medium!)

It provides a historic al touc hstone for our c ommunity. If it is moved somewhere else, I think it needs
to be replac ed with something else that symbolizes the c ommunity c ontinuity. A monument for
peac e might be nic e.
12/6/2013 5:51 PM
23
Very important historic al remembranc e. Looks nic e and great spot for sitting during events.
12/6/2013 5:17 PM
24
Could that monument be moved to the newer WWII memorial near Riverside Park and Hwy 3?
12/6/2013 5:07 PM
25
Move it to the Veterans' Park.
12/6/2013 3:54 PM
26
That monument was designed for the Square. It has been there sinc e it was installed in the 1920s.
It is also listed in the National Register nomination. I c ould see the memorial moving c loser to the
river but it would still have to be c lose to the original loc ation.
12/6/2013 2:13 PM
27
It doesn't have to stay right where it is, but the memorial in some fashion needs to be near the
downtown (and Ames Mill) as a further reminder of the history of the c ity and its possible link to the
James Younger gang c hoosing Nfld as a target.
12/6/2013 2:04 PM
28
It's a piec e of history, and so shouldn't be lost. But it c ould be moved elsewhere.
12/6/2013 1:58 PM
29
It seems worth c onsidering a different loc ation within the Bridge Square area, in order to keep it
"in" Bridge Square while allowing for possibly more effec tive spac e use.
12/6/2013 1:54 PM
30
It is essential to keep our Civil War Monument in its plac e. Can't imagine anyone wanting to move
this! We honor our veterans.
12/6/2013 11:09 AM
31
I think for history's sake it should stay somewhere in the vac inity, but it does not have to stay in it's
c urrent, prominent loc ation.
12/6/2013 10:24 AM
32
This c ould be moved to the other war memorial loc ation along highway 3. However, I'm not a
veteran. Veterans may have a different view and it would be a mistake to move something that
many people view as sac red.

I think the fountain should be moved. As the c enter of the square it is a divider and distrac tion. If it

12/6/2013 1:58 PM

It's pretty popular with the c hildren...in fac t, it's the c losest thing we've got to playground

12/6/2013 1:54 PM

Unbelievable that this c ould be moved from Bridge Square! jake's fountain adds so muc h interest,

Traffic pattern is the defining fac tor regarding any renovations to Bridge Square. As the Post Offic e

open the square to many more possibilities.

Really people. We c ould better on the holiday dec orations for Bridge Square. It needs to look like
we're paying attention to the details. Hello.

Maybe we should see what happens with the post offic e before putting too muc h money into
Bridge Square. I'm sure there will be signific ant rec onstruc tion whic h may damage or c hange the
c harac ter of Bridge Square. Someone would have to pay for damage, but fixing something is never
the same. I think we should spend money on fixing the damaged Riverwalk as mentioned in the

Remove the road on the West side of Bridge Square to make it a larger park area that direc tly

the dam and replac ing it with roc ks is a really bad idea. It'll look nic e about two weeks a year when

I love Bridge square - love that it's the c enter of many ac tivities and love that it's a great plac e to sit

Bridge Square is a wonderful multi-use spac e. It's a park of sorts, definitely a gathering spac e, and

I have c onsiderable experienc e in Cental Americ an c ities and towns where El Centro, or the
zoc olo, as it is often c alled, is the c enterpiec e of the c ommunity and the gathering spot for all...To
me, the Bridge Square does not offer that kind of feel or use....you need to make it not only people
friendly, but people attrac tive.....an absolute must is public WIFI availabe throughout the
park...benc hes to sit and talk, attrac tive landsc aping, good evening lighting, and events, even
small, that will attrac t people and families to c ome down and interac t...If it were me, I would give
serious c onsideration to c losing off streets and making them pedestrian avenues. In spec ific , I
would c lose off the southern street in front of the Olive Oil and Vinegar store, and c lose off the road
between the square and the park by the river....Keep open the northern road and the road up to the
Post Offic e building but don't have to go through to the north....This now c onnc ts the square with
the park by the river and greatly expands its use and attrac tiveness. Doing this would now allow in
the future for perhaps a restaurant or c afe with outside dining or c offee and a plac e to sit and
watc h people, etc . Tremendous attrac tion to have stuff like this foc used on the Square in good
weather.. I know you won't do muc h of this, but frankly otherwise you're juswt putting lipstic k
on...make it ATTRACTIVE to people to c ome to, or most of us will just keep walking by no matter
what you do . Finally, the Post offic e building is a big elephant there...it is very diffic ult and very
expensive to turn a building like that into something usable and people friendly/ the c ost of refitting
and remodeling that building will be enormous, enough to put off any uses that might be
c onduc ive to the SQuare, so alot of thought must be given to that. I would honestly have the City
buy it and turn it into City Offic es and meeting plac es to keep a public use feel to it. But if you
don't do anything else, PLEASE put in WIFI, or you won't attrac t muc h of anyone to the spac e

The grass--this is a tough one. Having green grass in summer is nic e. But it's a lot of work, $, and
c an be quite a bugger to upkeep. I c ould see removing some of the grass and ac tually having more
of the spac e paved, as well as inc luding more flower pots or beds in loc ations where they won't be
trampled during events. The pathways- sometimes a little funny for pedestrian use, espec ially
towards the riverfront. This would inc lude the c rosswalks going from the "island" toward the PO, and
along the riverfront c rossing 4th. Roads-I for one vote for c losing off either Water St and/or Bridge
Square Road using the in-street barric ades. By c reating a c ul-de-sac , you c ould still have adequate
parking, but this would c reate even more of a "park" feel in the square, would inspire more
pedestrian use, allow for more room for things inc luding summer and winter events alike (perhaps
an ic e rink!?). Sinc e this is the c enter of town, perhaps some of these parking spac es should be
handic ap ac c essible to c reate as muc h ac c essibility as possible.

My main beef about the square is the traffic flow - the little spur along the mailboxes is annoying

The elements in the square have evolved over time without muc h of a plan. Even so, it seems to
attrac t people and to work as a more formal gathering plac e. Before we c ompletely rec onstruc t it,
we should look at how to expand the area, how to c onnec t it with other elements down town, etc . It
will be hard to get a c onsensus on radic al c hange, and I'm not sure the square merits radic al
c hange. I hope the result of the survey is not a reflec tion of a small group. It is c ritic al that radic al
c hanges are the result of c areful agreement on an overall goal. This may be diffic ult to ac hieve.
12/6/2013 3:54 PM
43
Give people reasons to be in Bridge Square at times other than events. Make it a daily plac e to be.
12/6/2013 2:56 PM

Let's be sure to keep the post offic e on the Square. It brings people to the square, and just being by
the Square enc ourages them to maybe take a moment and relax.
12/6/2013 2:47 PM

Bridge Square is hard to work with for events and gatherings. It is a good plac e for small groups to
gather and talk but it is hard for large events.
12/6/2013 2:13 PM

I think that the Community Band Conc erts are very important. It would be great if we c ould reshape

Not pedestrian-friendly enough, traffic around the square is an issue in terms of traffic c onfusion

One c hange that c ould improve the Square would be to turn the streets on the west (Water Street)

Remove the road on the West side of Bridge Square to make it a larger park area that direc tly

the dam and replac ing it with roc ks is a really bad idea. It'll look nic e about two weeks a year when

Reduc e the street width surrounding the square and provide c oved parking with pedestrian bumpouts. Consider c oved parking on both sides of the street in front of the post offic e / NHS building.

I wonder if it would be possible to eliminate Water St. between 4th and the post offic e? Drivers c an

There must be some ways to organize the paved spac e around the fountain and the memorial
(both of whic h I think are important to retain) to emphasize these features and their
historic al/present value. Right now, I think they may be perc eived as obstac les to Bridge Square
rather than as c entral and important features. An easy (nec essary but not suffic ient) way to start
would be to use the kiosk to post a diagram of the square and a desc ription of its history, and the
history of the fountain and of the memorial (and maybe of the river). On the kiosk, the information
