The document describes the National SAR Winds Project (NSW) in Canada which uses radar data from satellites to measure ocean winds. The project aims to develop an operational system for processing SAR wind data nationally. Over 185 people were trained and the system provided wind coverage for Canadian coastal waters. User surveys found strong support for continuing an operational NSW system.

11. METAREAs Obligations NSW’s potential contribution to meeting Canada’s METAREAs obligations. The Map illustrates one day of SAR coverage from RADARSAT-2 (July 18, 2010). This is illustrative of current SAR coverage. Additional SAR missions, including the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (2016) will provide full Arctic coverage 2-3 times per day.

21. Strong Outflow Winds - Baffin Island Pangnirtung Extremely strong outflow winds through Pangnirtung and Kingnait Fiord on Baffin Island. At the time of this image (November 27, 10:36 GMT) winds at Pangnirtung were gusting over 80 km/hr. Within 2 hours after this image, gusts were near 130 km/hr.

Statistical characteristics for the developed models are summarized in this slide. The accuracy of models is characterised by Root Mean Square Error and R squared between buoy wind speed and retrieval wind speed. The results are presented for training and testing subsets. For comparison the same results for CMOD_IFR2 are shown also. Developed models have better accuracy than CMOD_IFR2.
