3. According to the Haitian government, since the earthquake of January 12, 2010, “there are still some 1.2 million people in 460 spontaneously organised camps. Of these, 250,000 people live in 21 of these camps presenting major risks for the well-being and safety of their inhabitants.” 1 With the hurricane season upon us, it is important to establish shelter for these people that is quickly accessible, affordable, and resistant to the natural elements that threaten them. In addition to the obvious physical challenges, there are also social needs to be addressed. Structures that give the displaced people of Haiti personal dignity and planning that makes communities possible and manageable are also matters of high priority.
