HEALTH SCIENCE 3.4.8 Explain that some things people take into their bodies from the environment can hurt them and give examples of such things.
http://dc.doe.in.gov/Standards/AcademicStandards/StandardSearch.aspx Vocabulary Bacteria- are tiny one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environment to live Viruses- need to be inside living cells to grow and reproduce.
Fungi- are many celled plant like organisms . They can not make their own food. Protozoa- are one celled organisms that love moisture and often spread disease though water Toxins- cause sickness, just like poisons..

You need a microscope to see germs. When they get in our body, we don’t know they are there until we start to have symptoms of being sick.
Background Information Germs are found all over the world in all kinds of places. There are 4 major types of germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. They can invade plants, animals and people and make them sick Bacteria are a type of germs that can reproduce outside the body and cause infections. Some infections include sore throats, ear infections and cavities.
Background Information How can you protect yourself from germs? Most germs are spread though the air in sneeze, coughs or breaths. Some pass from person to person by shaking hands then touching your face. The best way to protect your self is to not tough a lot of stuff. Cover your mouth when you cough. Wash your hands all the time before you eat.

There isn’t any vaccination to prevent you from getting a cold. Your immune system and white blood cells are your bodies best defense against a cold.
Step 3- Students should understand that they way they eat can protect them from getting sick. Have students create their own menu. Step 4 – Students are encouraged to draw pictures of food that they want to eat, along with cutting pictures of food out of magazines. If computers are available they can print out pictures and paste them to their menu
Step 5- Student should come up with a creative name for their restaurant. Students will identify the food that they put on the menu and explain how it is healthy Students will write a brief description for each meal. They will also include prices for each meal. Students will then exchange menu’s with other students and pretend to order, then add up how much their meal will cost.
