What has been done & Why YouTube forums suggests it is more of a spam-bot problem, as external sites do not automatically provide YouTube verification codes. ,[object Object],[object Object]
What has been done & Why YouTube’s Closed Caption (CC) (BETA) Principle: use Google's Voice Recognition technology to transcribe videos automatically Drawbacks: ,[object Object],[object Object]
Conclusion YouTube could be limiting access to its videos on external platforms to reduce the problem of spambots. Hence, users accessing YouTube videos via ViiKii are unable to watch the videos.
Suggestion #1 Validation codes If the root of the problem is the issue of spambots, then perhaps verification codes could be activated on the Viikii site. This would allow users to access the videos since they are able to prove that they are human.
Suggestion #1 Problems Quite troublesome because the videos can still be accessed on YouTube, just that there will not be any subtitling. YouTube may not be too keen on enabling validation codes outside its own platform.
Suggestion #2 YouTube and ViiKii could form a partnership. YouTube still hosts the videos while ViiKii provides the subtitling service. Users can access the videos with the subtitles without any problem, by enabling Close Captions.
Suggestion #2 (cont’d) Closed Captions (CC): A YouTube service still in its Beta stage. Transcribes audio that is in English and then translates it to various other languages. But, the service is not very accurate.
Suggestion #2 Closed Captions Currently, ViiKii still has an advantage over CC since most of the dramas on ViiKii are in Mandarin, Korean and Japanese and CC is not able to transcribe and translate from these languages. However, CC service improves to include such capabilities in the future, ViiKii’s usefulness will definitely be threatened.
Suggestion #2 Closed Captions Hence, to ensure ViiKii's survival is to propose that YouTube use the CC service to transcribe audio in languages other than English and then ViiKii can partner YouTube in this CC service with both the transcribing of the audio and translating it.
Suggestion #2 Problems Revenue : Who gets what? YouTube relies on advertising to make profits while ViiKii is dependant on donations. Should a partnership be formed, they have to decide who gets which share of the revenue.
The Next Stage Suggest the partnership to YouTube and ViiKii Patent the partnership suggestion Suggest ViiKii to copyright their subtitles Creative Commons If a partnership with YouTube is formed, other subtitling websites will not be able to ‘steal’ their subtitles without permission

Notas del editor

  1. ViiKii is a wesbite where users visit to watch subtitled dramas.Viikii sources their dramas and videos from Youtube. They do not host any videos on their own website. The ViiKii users would then add the subtitles to the dramas using a certain ViiKii tool available on their website. These subtitles that they add are soft, meaning that the subtitles are not added directly on the video itself. The subtitles itself is a separate file from the video. That means should one look up the original video on Youtube itself, the ViiKii user added subs will not appear.
  2. However, there are times when Youtube would restrict access to Viikii users since the videos are Youtube sourced. The error that is prompted to ViiKii users can be seen in the picture. To put it simply, the error means that Youtube is rejecting connections from the ViiKii server because too many users on ViiKii are trying to watching the same video during the same period of time. This is a possible problem since ViiKii does have a high volume of traffic to their website, at more than 60 thousand visitors for the whole of February. So this results in a problem for ViiKii users who want to watch their favourite foreign dramas in their preferred language.
  3. Before going into the objectives of our project, we would like to add a disclaimer here, stating that we are indeed aware of the copyright infringement issues involved in posting videos of dramas on Youtube. However, the main focus of our project is not dealing with the copyright infringement issue, hence the problem is assumed to be non-existing.
  4. With that disclaimer in mind, lets move on to the objectives of our project. The first objective of our project, was then to find out why exactly is Youtube limiting access to ViiKii’s servers? Which is causing many ViiKii users to get furious as they are unable to watch their subtitled videos..
  5. At first, we suspected that the problem of restricted access to ViiKii’s server is due to Youtube’s limited cloud computing capacity. And that by simply increasingYoutube’s cloud computing capacity, this problem can be solved.Hence one of our project’s objectives to discover if this solution is viable and appropriate in this situation. But we are also aware that the cloud computing capacity issue might not be the real cause of the limited access problem. Hence, in our project, we aim to find what is the true cause of the real problem. Our findings will be explained later on by Trang.
  6. The viikii plug in is a temporary solution to the problem of restricted access. The plug in has to installed onto the computer. It allows ViiKii users to bypass the problem of restricted access and allows them to watch the videos on ViiKii without Youtube restricting them.ViiKii does not offer an explanation on their website as to how their plug in works. Hence, our objective is to find out by ourselves, how the ViiKii plug in actually works to prevent Youtube from restricting access and users can watch the subtitled videos.
  7. Hence we carry out our own investigation to see if capacity is the answer. On 6 Mar 2010, we went to an external site that streams videos with subtitles from ViiKii (mysoju.com).
  8. As usual, we encountered the described problem.
  9. The same video, however, was accessible from YouTube site without the subtitles.
  10. Now that we installed the ViiKii plug-in, the problem is solved. We can see the subtitles for the same scene: “I just like summer”.
  11. So the video is still accessible directly from YouTube site (w/o subtitles). ON top of that, during maintenance period  only new data can’t be stored, the video is still accessible. Although this issue is not directly related to our project, it could be avoided by enhancing the cloud computing capacity used by YouTube (IaaS). In summary, our conclusion is that capacity is definitely not the cause of restricted access. Fortunately, YouTube forum gave us a hint in explaining the problem at hand. At times, users are asked to verify themselves as human (as opposed to spam requests) by keying validation codes before watching a video on YouTube. Being external viewers, they can no longer verify themselves with YouTube. Hence the restricted access from external website such as ViiKii.
  12. Next, we look at an existing solutions, so that we can suggest improvements if possible. One of them, the ViiKii plug-in, may work under the principle of rerouting network to obtain a different IP address.
  13. The other solution is YouTube’s BETA version of their Closed Caption (CC) program. It uses Google's Voice Recognition technology, which transcribes the video automatically if no original captions are available from video uploaders. Captions can be translated by the machine translation feature into many major languages. There are some problems with this service. First, the automatic feature is only available for English-language videos. Second, people who want to provide subtitles for the video may not be the owner. To provide fast translation, it is the practice that several subbers collaborate for each video as well. Given the fact that only owners can upload caption/transcript file for them, making subtitles available within a short period of time requires much coordination and sharing between users.
