Why Give Feedback?
The purpose of providing feedback is to affect behaviour. We
provide feedback either to:
1. reinforce positive behaviour
2. highlight aspects of behaviour which were less than effective in
the past, and explore ways of bringing about change

What are some of the reasons we don’t give
feedback?
The giving and receiving of feedback is the most powerful
tool you have as a manager for:
• creating high performance teams
• improving productivity and
• instilling a high-achievement mindset.

CARE – an example
CONTEXT Over the last month I have noticed that your attitude towards your supervisor has
been hostile and adversarial.
ACTION When we spoke about this last week you advised me that you had a personal
situation which was affecting your performance at work. You assured me the
situation could resolve itself within days and that your attitude would return to
normal.
RESULT From my own observations and feedback from others, it is clear that you are still
being affected – your performance and attitude are beginning to have an impact on
the rest of the team.
ESTEEM This hasn’t happened before, and you are a valuable employee who usually
contributes positively to the team.
EXPLORE I’d really like to understand what’s happening, and how we can help you lift your
performance back to the levels I know you are capable of.

Performance Killers

• Providing feedback poorly or not at all
• No goals or objectives
• No link to the bigger picture – how does what I do fit in?
• Provide no opportunity for learning or growth
• Different rules for managers and employees

Present • How do you think you are going now?
• What skills do you need to develop to get better at your job?
Future • What kinds of roles are you interested in doing in the future?
