In eastern states and the eastern Midwest (e.g., Illinois, Michigan), especially in large urban areas, the Northern House Mosquito (Culex pipiens) has been implicated as the primary vector of WNV to humans. This mosquito reproduces in small pools of water with high levels of organic pollution, such as those that are often found in urban areas. In states further west, including Minnesota, Culex tarsalis is suspected as being the primary vector of WNV to humans. Culex tarsalis is a known vector of western equine en- cephalitis (WEE) virus.
