Chapters 1 2 3 4 5
Legacy Creation &Management What is Your Legacy? Photographs, videos, blogs, journals & Facebook pages…all capture moments in your life. Yet, they do not convey your legacy by themselves. With Legacy Portfolio you will discover and articulate who you are, what you have done, and what you believe in an accurate and interesting format. From the first entry you will have begun creating a priceless heirloom that will be treasured by those closest to you for generations to come.
Legacy Portfolio “Legacy Portfolio” is a multi-faceted interactive tool designed to help you recognize, gather, organize, filter & manage your legacy in order to accurately capture the essence of your life. Through Legacy Portfolio you will learn more about yourself, your Life, and God’s hand in it. The result will be an interesting, accurate, and timeless heirloom that will help you pass on your Heritage and Legacy to those closest to you.
Legacy Portfolio “Legacy Portfolio” is filled with exercises and routines that will prompt you to recall important and interesting times in your life. These tools will help you chronicle your life in an interesting and entertaining format that will literally become a family treasure. Imagine the thrill of finding your great-great grandfather’s writings of his journey from Europe (or Asia, Africa…) to North America. In the same way, you will be creating a first-hand account of your world and the worldview have developed.
Technology has changed our world significantly. Arenas such as Facebook, My Space, LinkedIn, and the Blogosphere have literally connected billions of people. A potential worldwide audience is available to every computer owner who wants to communicate with the world. *Facebook claims over 750million members. *Technorati estimates over 30 million active blogs. While many aspire to reach the masses with online representations of their life and worldview, nearly all reach fewer than 50 people. The purpose of Legacy Portfolio is to capture your life for those you influence greatly. Those with whom you share your life’s most intimate & important aspects.- an “intimate-cast” or “I-cast”.
We live in the age of superstars who have unprecedented opportunities to influence literally billions of people. Yet the reality is that true influential power is decentralized in billions of tiny units around the globe-with parents and core family members. You cannot help but leave a significant impression on your family and intimate friends-for good or bad. It is here, in the arena of family and friends that your legacy is primarily built. It is also here, almost exclusively, that it has power and significance. The truth is that Facebook and the blogosphere really doesn’t care what you think or about your photo albums. Yet millions still seek to be influential and significant t in the broadcast arenas of the web often giving scant attention to the 5 or 10 people they will influence greatly whether they do so purposefully or not. I-casting is a private message with a targeted audience for the purpose of conveying an important aspect of your heritage or legacy. It could be in the form of a love letter to a spouse written during courtship, a blessing bestowed upon a child, a letter of confession or forgiveness. Clearly, most already know these elemental truths, yet they have not taken the vital step of writing things down.
Bring the pieces of your life together in your Legacy Portfolio Legacy Portfolio
My stuff is safe with “Spacebook”… they will be around forever “too big to fail” Isn’t that what was said about GM &Citibank? Once personal data is stored on most public forum web sites, the site has legal control over the data- AKA- your life’s portfolio. A reading of the terms of agreement for these type of sites should give you pause if your data is meaningful to you. In essence you give complete control over all data you submit to them. Years of blog posts, family photos, personal web sites are now in the hands of a company to do with as they please. Beyond the intent to allow you to access YOUR data for the foreseeable future, these organizations have no obligation to return your intellectual property if they discontinue the existing business model.
Legacy Items are any item that you deem worthy of your Legacy Portfolio. As you REMEMBER things from your past jot down as much as you can as a ROUGH DRAFT. Next, REFLECTon it thoroughly, then REWRITE the story until it reflects what you want it to convey. Find photos or video that capture the moment visually. REFINEeven more with narration or sound effects. This has become a chapter in your legacy - your Legacy Item.
There are two ways you can begin to filter through the “data” to begin your Portfolio. You can start with the core of your legacy. If you want to get to the point and the “important” stuff quickly-this is your route. You already have a few core principles and beliefs you would like to leave as your legacy. Writing about the pillars of your world view may be your start/end point. Others may need to ramp up to that point by honing their worldview through less weighty topics such as school, vacations, sports. O R
Data Mining = Legacy Finding In business, there is a strategic discipline known as “Data Mining”. Wikipedia defines data mining as; the process of extracting hidden patterns from large amounts of data. In the modern digital world, our lives are captured digitally nearly everyday. The end result is usually not clarity or wisdom - but data overload. What is needed is to filter that data into useful information, which then will lead to defining and refining our legacy portfolio. In this chapter we have put together some topical questions to spur your remembrance. Some questions will remind you of a special summer of your youth. Others may walk you through a painful chapter in your life. Still others will bring you back to that mountaintop when life made sense and the future looked bright. The purpose is to prod you into thinking about how events shaped you and to (hopefully) recognize God’s role and patterns in those moments.
Topical Question Part I “LIGHTER Side of Life” Some of life’s greatest lessons take place in the lighter arenas of life. This is a great place to pick a topic and just write. Reflect on the lighter side of life. What did you learn from participating in sports, watching movies, at concerts, or hanging with your friends at the local watering hole.
[object Object]
What is your greatest personal “thrill of victory moment”? “Agony of defeat moment”?
Why do you follow sports?
What is your favorite sport to play? To watch?
Who are your favorite athletes? Why?
What significant things have you learned from sports?SPORTS
CARS-TRUCKS-BIKES How did you become interested in cars/ trucks? What was your first car? Make a list of all the vehicles you have owned. List the top three. Bottom three. Why? If you won the gift a new vehicle (to own not sell) valued up to $70K what domestic make would you choose? Import? Why? What is the fastest you have ever driven? As a passenger? Have you ever been in a serious accident? What happened? Write about your favorite road trip of all time. What kind of car best fits your personality? Why?
Hobbies/Leisure/Entertainment What is your idea of a great weekend? Who would join you? Why? Name your favorite three movies. Why? Do you watch movies to learn or be entertained? What is the latest hobby you have taken up? Why? Write about a time you have been injured by a hobby. Make a leisure themed “bucket list”. What is one thing you always wanted to do but will not be able to because of age, money, time… Are you OK with that? Can you change it? What is the next big event you are planning? What is the best party you have ever been to? What hobby are you known for? Is that you?
Topical Questions Part II “Performance Arenas of the World” In some areas of life we perform and conform to show mastery over life’s challenges. The areas of Career, Money, and Education are some of the main criteria used in the world to assess success, ability, worth, and even happiness.
Career ,[object Object]
How did you choose your career?
When did you get your first promotion or pay raise?
Describe a big event or deal in your career.
Who were your favorite colleagues? Least favorite?
Who were your mentors? How did they influence you?

  • 41. What is a Digital Altar©? A Digital Altar© is a gift to God made for the purpose of remembering His goodness and presence at a particular place and time in your life. A guiding verse is Hebrews 20:24 where God tells Moses to remind the people not to make, or worship, gold and silver idols, but make simple earth based altars that record when God’s moved & blessed his people. Exodus 20:24 (Life Application Bible) “The altars you make for me must be simple altars of earth. Offer on such altars your sacrifices to me- your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Build altars in the places where I remind you who I am, and I will come and bless you there.”

  • 43. Ryan, Sal, and Jascha’s Altar “Haven’t I told you this story before?” Sal looked at me oddly as he seemed sure that we must have heard “the Ryan story “before. “No, I don’t think so.” I said. We were at Chuck E. Cheese with Sal and Jascha for their son Ryan’s fourth birthday party. Sal told of Ryan’s dramatic entry into life four years prior. Ryan was born suffering from” supraventricular tachycardia” (SVT). SVT is where each heart beat repeats its impulse cycle through the heart a second time-every time. This meant that the heart rate is double what it normally would be. Additionally, an infant’s heartbeat is already a rapid 100-120 times per minute. With SVT Ryan’s tiny heart was literally off the charts pounding at an estimated 220-240 beats per minute. He was in jeopardy of cardiac arrest in the first hours of his life. Sal had been at another hospital earlier in the day visiting his Mother who had been seriously injured in an automobile crash. Remember His marvelous works that he has done; His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth. ₁∕₄
  • 44. Ryan, Sal, and Jascha’s Altar He got the surprising call from Jascha, who was not due for another four weeks; he needed to get the hospital ASAP as the doctors were going to perform an emergency C-section. Once Ryan was delivered, the Doctors had decided to try two procedures to “shock” Ryan’s heart into a normal rhythm. The first was simply using ice packs to cause enough of a shock from the cold to reset his heartbeat. If this failed, the second procedure was to be the child version of the shock paddles used on adults in order stimulate the heart in cases of heart failure. In these cases, a probe inserted into the child’s mouth and down the esophagus near to the heart. From inside the body a shock is delivered to the heart region in order to jolt it enough to cause a reset into a normal rhythm. 2∕₄
  • 45. Ryan, Sal, and Jascha’s Altar Sal arrived to meet his new son with tubes and straps covering his little body. He got caught up on the situation with the Doctors in the operating room until they were ready to begin attempts to slow his heart rate. Desperately wanting to stay and help in anyway, he realized that the stress and fatigue of the day’s events were getting the best of him and that he was about to blackout. As he went to leave, he looked down at Ryan. Ryan intently looked up at his dad, the two clearly connecting with each other; Sal placed his hand on his tiny forehead and said a prayer asking God to allow his son to live. Instantly, Ryan’s heartbeat calmed down to normal rates. The Doctors saw no need to continue and the procedure was canceled. Sal sat and broke down out of relief, joy, and exhaustion. 3∕₄
  • 46. Ryan, Sal, and Jascha’s Altar By the time Sal got to the highlight of the story, both parents eyes were filled with tears. Being great parents, they hunted down Ryan and gave him a big hug, reminded of the blessing he is in their lives. Yet, they both commented on how they don’t really think about “the miracle” much anymore nor even talk about it;that has faded from our minds over time. Ryan 4∕4
  • 47. The Miracle Boy - Joshua It was somewhere around May of 2001. Mike had just finished working for the University of Phoenix in Hawaii. We had about a month to prepare for our move to Kamakura, Japan. On this particular day, Mike was helping to set up the convention center for the Four Square Denomination’s Annual International Conference. He had been down at the convention center setting up booths when everybody took a break for lunch. He thought it best to drive across the island and eat lunch at home and to see how Kyoko was doing. When he arrived he came up the stairs into the apartment announcing “Tadaima!” (I’m home). But no response of “Okairi” (welcome home) came. He looked in the bedroom and then in Nicole’s bedroom. No Kyoko.
  • 48. Joshua -The Miracle Boy Mike noticed the bathroom door open about an inch, so he slowly opened the door. I found Kyoko on hands and knees writhing in so much pain that she could not even speak. I ran to her and asked what had happened. She held her abdomen. After a few minutes of trying to explain what was happening I helped her down to the car and raced toward Castle Medical Centers emergency entrance. We arrived in just a few minutes. The staff brought out a wheelchair and took Kyoko in for examination. Fortunately Kei and Mike Navyac lived just 200 yards from the hospital. I dropped off Nicole with Kei and went back to the emergency room. After a few tests, the emergency room doctor said that they found tissue mass and fluid in Kyoko’s abdominal cavity. They also ran a blood test. His diagnosis was an “ectopic pregnancy”.
  • 49. Joshua -The Miracle Boy Kyoko was pregnant - which we did not know. Unfortunately, the zygote had implanted in her fallopian tube and had grown into a fetus, too large to for her tube. The fallopian tube rupture and the result was the incredible pain she felt at home just an hour before. The doctor gave Kyoko two shots of morphine to ease the pain. He had called a local surgeon who would remove the fragments of fallopian tube and the remains of the baby. The surgery was scheduled to take place as soon as the doctor arrived which was to be within an hour. As Kyoko and Mike waited for the surgeon, they sat in shock. We began to realize that not only would she have major surgery in less than an hour, but also that she was pregnant and the baby was lost. I asked Kyoko if she would like to pray. I began to pray as best I could not knowing what to say. My thoughts were for Kyoko’s safety, for the doctor to make no mistakes and for a quick recovery.
  • 50. Joshua -The Miracle Boy Then as an after thought and almost out of Christian duty I prayed “God and we know that you can heal her”. I knew I was supposed to pray that option for God can heal, I have read it in the Bible dozens of time. Unfortunately, when the time came where I could have used a miracle but I had no faith in it whatsoever. My thoughts were to pray for the skill of the doctor and for the imminent removal of one of Kyoko’s fallopian tubes and the remains of the baby. Shortly after we finished praying the surgeon came into the room and introduced herself. She began asking Kyoko questions and doing a pelvic exam. At that point Kyoko was bright eyed and feeling normal. The doctor was perplexed by her “genki-ness” and lack off pain during the pelvic exam. Trying to appear smart to the doctor, I offered up the notion that two shots of morphine would most certainly kill any pain she might be experiencing. “Not true”, the doctor told me with undertones of “shut up you uneducated moron who knows not what pain is nor the effect of morphine”. I complied quickly and was quiet for the rest of the month. She went on to explain how the pain should be severe as it was when Kyoko was in the bathroom at home. And that morphine would numb it significantly but she should still be feeling great pain as the doctor pressed on her abdomen. By now, Kyoko was ready to hop off the gurney and jog to the car. The doctor concluded something odd was happening and wanted to hold off on the surgery. She asked Kyoko to stay overnight for observation. She would re-evaluate in the morning. The next morning came and Kyoko felt perfect.
  • 51. Joshua -The Miracle Boy The doctor cancelled the surgery and scheduled more extensive exams in her office two days later on Friday morning. Friday morning came and Kyoko felt fine. She went through a battery of tests similar to those done in the emergency room three days earlier. She brought the results into the room with a wry smile on her face.   The results were that Kyoko’s fallopian tubes were both in tact and she was pregnant with a “zygote” firmly planted exactly where it should be. Eight months later, we named that zygote Joshua Sho Haley– our miracle boy.
  • 52. L3 Life Lessons Learned Learning to Rest In order to put myself through college I began a landscaping business. It was a good respite from the mental strain of college and the pay was better than most other positions that allowed a flexible work schedule. One of the most lucrative aspects of landscaping was in trimming palm trees. Easily I could make more money in an hour of tree trimming than four hours of pushing a lawnmower. The only problem was that I had a fear of heights. One particular job featured about 15 40-50’ tall palm trees that were the thinnest I had ever done- by far! The two or three jobs I had prior to this job were on hefty palm trees that contained hornets and birds nests, huge spikes on the frons that had a habit of finding my forearm as they fell to the ground. Palm tree climbing gear consists of two simple spikes that are fastened to the bottom of your boot. The two spikes jut below the arch of one’s foot. By pointing your toes outward and jamming the spike in the tree trunk you can walk up the tree with the aid of a rope or leather belt. This alone is a tiresome maneuver. By the time I got to the tops of tree my legs were already get a little tired.
