2. What are fossil fuels? Fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas, are a non-renewable source of energy. Formed from plants and animals that lived up to 300 million years ago, fossil fuels are found in deposits beneath the earth. The fuels are burned to release the chemical energy that is stored within this resource. Energy is essential to modern society as we know it. Over 85% of our energy demands are met by the combustion of fossil fuels.
4. How is coal formed? Coal is formed from vegetation that grew about 400 years ago. Coal was formed as massive amounts of vegetation died and fell into the swamp-like surfaces that existed in the heavily vegetated Earth of the Carboniferous Period. Huge mats of waterlogged plant material were formed that resisted decay. Over millions of years, as the climatic and geologic conditions changed, these plant sediments were covered and compacted by other sediments.
5. Different Stages of Coal Formation? main types of coal-anthracite, bituminous, and lignite anthracite-hardest, more carbon and higher energy content bituminous-in between lignite-softest, low in carbon, high in oxygen content and hydrogen peat-precursor which is a substance from which another substance is formed in coal
6. Coal As A Fossil Fuel Coal has been used to heat up homes and make electricity as well. The heat from coal is used to make pottery and cement as well as grass.
7. Oil Formation Oil and Natural gases have formed from the remains of plants and sea creatures. they are the result of the action of heat and pressure on plant and animal remains over millions of years, in the absence of air. The crude oil we use today was formed millions of years ago but crude oil is still being formed today. More crude oil is formed every time an animal or plant in the sea dies and is squashed by layers of other dead marine life (that turns into rock)over the top.
8. Oil Used as Fossil Fuel Tires, ink, crayons, CD and DVD’s eyeglasses, and dishwashing liquid.
9. How is natural gas formed? methane, is a gas or a compound that has one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms as well.
10. Natural Gas As Fossil Fuel natural gas has been used in variety of ways to produce steel, glass, paper, brick and electricity.
11. What are Refineries? importance? A refinery is a factory that takes a raw material and transforms it into petrol and hundreds of other useful product and it is important because many products like gasoline wouldn't be made without refineries
12. Exxon Valdez The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, when the Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, hit Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef and spilled an estimated minimum 10.8 million US gallons (40.9 million liters, or 250,000 barrels) of crude oil. It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters ever to occur in history
13. Deep Water Horizon The incident was an offshore drilling incident in the Gulf Of Mexico, causing the deep water spill. Workers tried to put fire off by using water, because of this there was more oil flowing in the gulf of Mexico. Many animals and habitats were destroyed, which was a new threat of plants and animals
14. How is oil formed natural gas is used to produce steel, glass, paper, clothing, brick, electricity and as an essential raw material for many common products. Some products that use natural gas as a raw material are; paints, plastic, antifreeze, photographic, film, and medicine.
