Here are some of my favourite free or really
cheap apps to install to turn your phone
into a super science device.

7. Lab Timer

Why do I like it?
Very handy lab timer, which can run
four timers with alarms at the same
iPhone
time. Great if you have your
experiments staggered and need to
remember when to record the results
for each one.

Why do I like it?
A simple periodic table app
which gives more information

navigate our HS Chem class.

Why do I like it?
Perfect for any counting activity, such as cell counts. It times the clicks, and
produces cumulative graph. Better still – results can be emailed as .csv.

11. iSeismometer

Why do I like it?
Makes good use of the iPhone’s
accelerometer to give readings
iPhone
in three axes. Could be used for
acceleration labs.
Data can be easily emailed or
uploaded.

12. Simple Radar* Gun

*no, not really.
Why do I like it?
It’s not really a radar speed gun. Set
the known distance and hold the
iPhone
screen to start the timer. Let go to
stop. v = d/t is calculated right away,
giving the velocity. Cool.
Units can be changed from km/h to
iTouch
mph, though students will need to
carry out their own calculations to
get to m/s.

Why do I like it?
A lot of great information about the brain in a nicely-rendered, 3D,
rotatable model. You could spend hours on this app!

15. Gray’s Anatomy – Student Edition

Why do I like it?
Because it is a brilliant set of anatomical drawings! It is a large app,
with lots of resources, so get comfortable and enjoy!

View 3D renderings of the molecules we discuss in class. This puts them
in more authentic context than 2D simplified drawings.

Why do I like it?
Look up in the sky. What do you see? I don’t know either, but the stars
are planets are amazing and this helps work out what is where.

SPARKvue for PASCO Dataloggers

Is a free app for datalogging, which allows you to collect data from the
phone’s internal accelerometer. You can even connect many Pasco probes
via bluetooth, as long as you are prepared to buy an expensive adapter.
Apparently the cost is due to the chip required for bluetooth with Apple.
