3. Introduction
My Background
– Over 30 years in marketing specialty fibers – Hoechst
Fibers/Hoechst Celanese/KoSa as well as Cargill
Dow/NatureWorks
– Over 5 years managing FR business – Trevira
FR/Trevira CS
– Currently have my own consulting business in
marketing
This presentation
– Focus on flame-resistant contract market vs. other
markets for FR fibers and fabrics
8. What is “inherently FR polyester?”
In a process pioneered by Trevira Corporation, the
polyester has a component (typically phosphorous)
added to the liquid polymer.
This phosphorous component causes the melting point of
the polyester to be lowered.
This lower melting point causes the polyester fabric to
shrink away from the flame more quickly than regular
polyester.
If combustion does takes place, the burning phosphorous
creates a halogen gas around the burn site.
This halogen gas shuts off the oxygen necessary to
maintain combustion and the fabric self-extinguishes.
9. Inherent flame resistant polyester

the fabrics

11. Question: what is a “hybrid” or
“blended” fabric?
Answer: a fabric that is
constructed with inherent FR yarn
in one direction (warp or fill) and
non-FR yarns in the other.
12. Inherent FR vs. “hybrids”
“Hybrid fabrics” are a dilution of FR fibres
with non-FR fibres

Non-FR-fibers
13. Question: what is a
“topically treated” FR
fabric?
Answer: a fabric that has a
chemical applied in finishing that
makes the fabric more resistant to
flame.
14. FR Treated Textiles
Topical treatment of fabric with FR
chemicals
– Non-permanent
– Possible -Rough, boardy hand
