Pastor's Notes...
My dear parishioners,
Today we reach the end of the official summary of Pope Francis' first Encyclical Lumen Fidei
(The Light of Faith).
“When faith is weakened, the foundations of humanity also risk being weakened”, writes the
Pope, and if we remove faith in God from our cities, we will lose our mutual trust and be united
only by fear. Therefore we must not be ashamed to publicly confess God, because faith
illuminates social life. Another area illuminated by faith is that of suffering and death:
Christians are aware that suffering cannot be eliminated, but it may be given meaning; it can
be entrusted to the hands of God who never abandons us and therefore become “a moment of
growth in faith”. To he who suffers, God does not give reasons to explain everything, but rather
offers His presence that accompanies us, that opens up a threshold of light in the shadows. In
this sense, faith is linked to hope. And here the Pope makes an appeal: “Let us refuse to be
robbed of hope, or to allow our hope to be dimmed by facile answers and solutions which block
our progress”.
Conclusion (nos. 58-60): Blessed are you who believe (Luke 1,45). At the end of Lumen Fidei,
the Pope invites us to look to Mary, “perfect icon” of faith who, as the Mother of Jesus,
conceived “faith and joy”. The Pope elevates his prayer to Maria that she might assist man in
his faith, to remind us those who believe are never alone and to teach us to see through Jesus'
eyes.
God bless.

Notices from around the Auckland Diocese and beyond...
MISSION MONTH STARTS this week with the celebrations of the feast of some beloved
saints who have a great sense of partnering with God: St Therese of the Child Jesus (Oct 1),
St. Francis of Assisi (Oct 4), St. Maria Faustina Kowalska (Oct 5). It is also the week of the
feast of the Guardian Angels (Oct 2) and the start of the month of the Holy Rosary. These
along are reasons to give praise to God.
“Become bearers of the Good News of Christ!” This is the theme of our Mission
Month 2013; it came from Pope Francis. Pope Francis has enchanted the hearts of many. He
attracts not only the Roman Catholics, but also the peoples of other churches, faiths, and the
non-religious. Even CNN TV featured him in a 30-minute documentary this September. Pope
Francis is forging a new pathway in doing mission today that helps New Evangelization
become a reality. He is giving us renewed ardour in the manner of living out our Baptismal
commitment. His manner of communication and lifestyle is simple and sincere. Our Mission
Sunday Poster 2013 and our Newsletter cover is our way of honouring the gift of Pope
Francis to the Catholic Church.
