The Life Cycle of a Butterfly Gabby Hamilton EDU 290 11:00-12:15 http://askabiologist.asu.edu/sites/default/files/monach_lifecycle3.gif
What is a Butterfly? Butterflies are insects. They have four wings and six legs. Butterflies have three body parts. Their bodies are covered in tiny hairs. http://7art-screensavers.com/screenshots/butterfly/reddish-butterfly.jpg
What is a Life Cycle? A life cycle goes through each stage of development. The butterfly has four main stages: One: Egg Two: Caterpillar Three: Chrysalis Four: Butterfly http://www.milleprime.com.sg/htm/elearning/lifecycleanimals/butterfly-life-cycle.gif
Stage One: Eggs The butterfly’s eggs are always small. They can be oval or circular. Sometimes eggs have ridges or indents on them. http://www.thebutterflysite.com/life-cycle.shtml http://exhibits.pacsci.org/insects/buttermoth.html
Stage One: Eggs The butterfly’s eggs are laid on a leaf. Eggs are always by food so the caterpillar can eat after it has hatched. If you look closely sometimes you can see the caterpillar growing inside of the egg. http://www.images.on.ca/Cossey/Eggs%20Gallery/images/Butterfly%20Anglewing%20QMark%20eggs%20R0081%20opt.jpg
Stage Two: Caterpillar Caterpillar’s hatch from the butterfly’s eggs. They spend most of their time eating. The caterpillar needs to eat so it can grow. http://www.thebutterflysite.com/life-cycle.shtml
Stage Two: Caterpillar This stage is where the most growing takes place. As they grow bigger caterpillars shed their skin. All caterpillars do not look the same and do not eat the same leaves. http://www.thekidswindow.co.uk/images/CMScontent/Image/caterpillar.jpg
Stage Three: Chrysalis When caterpillars are fully grown they make a button of silk that helps them stick to a leaf or twig. The caterpillar sheds it skin for the last time. Under the old skin is a hard skin called a chrysalis. http://www.scottcamazine.com/photos/monarch/images/02pupation_jpg.jpg
Stage Three: Chrysalis The chrysalis is usually brown or green. They blend into the background because they do not want to be bothered. When the caterpillar is in the chrysalis it is changing. http://www.carolinabutterflysociety.org/baldwin/BlkSwallowtailChrysalisAug-06opt.jpg
Stage Three: Chrysalis The caterpillar’s organs and other body parts dissolve while in the chrysalis. Their body parts then re-grow into the organs, tissues, limbs, and wings of the butterfly. http://www.kidsbutterfly.org/files/images/Danaus_plexippus4.jpg
Stage Four: Butterfly After the caterpillar is done growing inside the chrysalis a butterfly will come out. When it first hatches the butterfly will not be able to use it’s wings. The wings will be soft and folded against the butterfly’s body. http://www.thebutterflysite.com/life-cycle.shtml
Stage Four: Butterfly Blood will pumped through the butterfly’s wings to make them big and strong enough to fly. The butterfly will learn to fly 3-4 hours after it comes out of the chrysalis. The butterfly is finally an adult. http://www.free-nature-animal-butterfly-wallpaper.com/wallpapers/butterfly15.jpg
Fun Facts Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow. Butterflies can not fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. The average lifespan for a butterfly is about one month. Butterflies eat water, nectar, and liquids from different fruits. http://www.cornwall-butterfly-conservation.org.uk/images/mambo/stories/large/leontruscott/peacock_butterfly.jpg
