6. From humble beginning to an
engineering conglomerate
1888
• Two brothers from the Kirloskar family form a partnership firm
engaged in the assembly and sale of bicycles
• The firm manufactures India‟s first iron plough in 1904, followed by a
1900 number of firsts in agri-machinery such as fodder cutter, sugarcane
to crusher etc.
1920 • Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL) is incorporated in 1920 and is the
flagship company of the Group
• Mysore Kirloskar Limited, a machine tool company is hived out of KBL
in 1940
• Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited, a diesel engine company is hived out of
1921 KBL in 1946
