1. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
2. Media institution: Film distributor
A film distributor is a company which is responsible for the
marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a
film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made
available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either
theatrically or for home viewing. A distributor may do this directly,
if the distributor owns the theatres or film distribution networks,
or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors.
To the right is an image which shows the process of how the film is
distributed and where the money goes. The image also shows
where the money goes that the consumers give. It shows that the
producers get the most money whereas the distributor and
theatres receive the least.
3. • As a group we each researched a different film studio to see which was the best
fit for our film. From our results the media institution that we chose to distribute
our film is Lionsgate. This is because Lionsgate being a big American film studio
have produced and distributed very successful films such as The Hunger Games
which made $408,010,692 and the Expendables which made $103,068,524. After
doing this research we thought that Lionsgate was a successful studio and would
make a profit on our film. Also Lionsgate distributed Harry Brown which is a
British crime movie which is very similar to ours and other big American studios
wouldn't have done something like this. This is because Lionsgate usually focus
on foreign and independent films which is unusual for big American studios
because sometimes they are too controversial. Therefore, as a group we felt that
our story line will appeal to Lionsgate the most out of all the studios we
researched.
4. Also from doing research about Lionsgate we realised that
Lionsgate has worked with many of our actors that feature
in our film. Therefore, this factor pushed us towards
choosing Lionsgate as the studio has worked with many of
our actors before, which will create a good working
atmosphere which will enhance our movie. Lionsgate has
worked with Jason Statham (Transporter), Ray Winstone
(Tracker), Tom Hardy (Warrior), Tamer Hassan (Blood Out)
and Idris Elba (Daddy's Little Girl).
