Learning to use these tools may seem a bit puzzling at first; however, in a few short lessons you should become comfortable.
The main technologies that we will be using in this course is Blackboard, our course management system; student e-mail, the VCCS electronic e-mail provided to students; MS Office 2013 which are productivity tools that allow you to create files for many purposes and SAM 2013, simulation software used as a teaching and testing tool.
Blackboard is the course management system used by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). This provides the school an organized manner in which to deliver, manage, and grade course material. In Blackboard you will learn to use the Announcements page to retrieve important information from your instructor. You will use the assignments area to retrieve assignments and upload your completed work. The discussion board area will be used for attendance and to converse on assigned topics. You will also find a variety of student resources available in Blackboard.
An e-mail account, Powered by Google, is provided to each VCCS student. You will use e-mail to communicate with your instructors privately throughout the semester and to receive course announcements. You may also find other educational uses for using your e-mail account.
MS Office 2013 is a suite of productivity tools. You will learn to use MS Word to create various types of documents including letters, flyers, reports and more. MS Excel will be used to create spreadsheets and small databases. MS PowerPoint will be use to create presentations that may be delivered to a live audience or designed to be delivered over the web.
SAM 2013 is a simulation software package that will be used to teach you lessons in each of the MS Office units. In this program you will work through tutorials that include text, sound, and images. You will be given the opportunity to listen, practice with assistance, practice alone and ultimately tested.
The course is designed for each of these tools to work together to create a learning environment organized, interactive and effective.
Tutorials for using each of these tools are available under the assignments link in the Getting Started folder. While there may seem to be a lot of technology in this course, with regular use you will learn to master each area. Understand that the tools and skills will convey to other courses as you continue your education.
