Fleas are parasites that need to feed off a host’s blood to stay alive. There are several types of fleas in the world that feed on different animals, but the most common are cat fleas. Don’t let the name fool you.
1. Adults emerge and live on
1 host for up to 2 months
Eggs hatch in 2-3 days
A female adult flea, after mating,
starts laying eggs while on the host.
Larvae hatch from the eggs within
a few days and molt 2-3 times
before creating a cocoon.
These eggs drop off the host
into the surrounding environment;
carpeting, flooring or outdoor
lawns and leaf litter.
Pupae live from 5-10 days
to 6 months in a cocoon
The pupae within the cocoon
remains dormant for a week up to
6 months before emerging as an
adult that immediately latches onto
a host for its first blood meal.
