2. Siobahn Morse, Executive Director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction
Studies, discusses Demerol Addiction and Abuse.
What is Demerol?
Demerol is part of a group of
drugs considered to be narcotic
pain relievers. Similar to
morphine, Demerol is used to
treat moderate to severe pain. As
an opiate agonist, Demerol is a
Schedule II controlled substance
because it is highly abuse-likely.
What are the effects of
Demerol?
Demerol alters the perception of pain in the spinal cord and the central nervous
system but offers no effect on nerve endings. Demerol does trigger the brain’s
pleasure centers while blocking pain, intensifying its ability to generate addiction and
addiction behaviors.
What is Demerol addiction and abuse?
Demerol is an opiate drug. Users can quickly build a
tolerance for the drug and require more to achieve this
same effect.
Signs of dependence and abuse include a strong desire or
a need to continue taking more of the medicine and a need
to increase the dose to maintain the effects of the medicine.
Demerol is available in both tablet and liquid form. It can
also be administered by injection into large muscles or
through intravenous methods. When abused, it’s taken
orally, injected or snorted.
What are the side effects of Demerol?
The side effects of Demerol include: light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting,
sweating, weakness, headache, agitation, and tremor.

include severe anxiety, insomnia,
profuse sweating, muscle spasms,
shivering, and tremors.
