Filippo brunelleschi

Editor's Notes

  1. Filippo Brunelleschi, was born in Florence, Italy in 1377 .He is the son of a lawyer,. Fist he trained as a goldsmith, draftsman, and sculptor, and later he traveled to Rome to immerse himself in classical art and architecture. The Pazzi Chapel
  2. The defining moment in Filippo ’ s life came when he lost a competition to create doors for Florence ’ s cathedral. The test was to create a low relief, showing Abraham ’ s sacrifice of Isaac. It is Lorenzo Ghiberti who won the competition and became his lifetime rival. The Pazzi Chapel
  3. In 1418 Filippo and Ghiberti once again competed to design the dome of Florence Cathedral. So Filippo challenged the architects to explain how they would stand an egg upright on a flat. the man who could do it would be intelligent enough to build the dome. All architects tried but they were unsuccessful. The Pazzi Chapel
  4. When it was Filippo ’s turn, he took the egg and cracked its bottom on the marble to make it stay upright. It was enough to think of it The Pazzi Chapel
  5. Filippo won the competition though he refused to say how he would solve the others problems. This involved new engineering techniques and inventing all kinds of new construction equipment specifically for the project. The Pazzi Chapel
  6. The completed structure immortalized both Brunelleschi and the city of Florence. This was exactly what both intended. The Duomo became Florence ’ s defining monument. The exploit of Filippo -at that time- is technological equivalent of putting a man on the moon. The Pazzi Chapel
  7. Filippo built many works of art in Italy. Here are a few of his most notable works: the Pazzi Chapel the church of San Lorenzo the church of San Spirito Santa Maria degli Angeli (in 1436) The Pazzi Chapel
  8. Filippo is also famous for his discovery of perspective, he invented the way of representing a three-dimensional object in space on a two-dimensional surface in order to give the same impression of relative position The Pazzi Chapel
  9. Finally, Filippo dies on May 15, 1446. All Florence turned out to mourn his passing. And we can read in his tomb: “Here lies the body of the great ingenious man Filippo Brunelleschi of Florence » “who expanded our perspective forever” The Pazzi Chapel
