Qualitative research: Is information that is more to do with people’s opinion, views and
preferences. Secondary and primary research methods can produce qualitative information.
An example of a qualitative research is you might get asked for a feedback from a shop or
restaurant asking questions is the service was satisfactory and see after 100 customers the
results and see what might need improving.

Quantitative:Is information mostly presented in tables, charts and diagrams. Primary and
secondary research methods can also produce quantitative information. An example of a
Quantitative research is that you might be asked to rate a video game and you will either
have to say out of 1 to 10 and it’s more factual on ratings, data and viewing figures and its
more about numbers.

This report will be about primary and secondary research methods. Research methods are a
way of finding out information and data that is needed for your research. There are two
different type of research methods the first one is primary research, or also known as in
business terms field research, and the second one is secondary research or also known as in
business terms desk research.
Primary research is where information or data does not exist and it needs to be collected or
observed by a person.

Here’s some example of primary research methods:
*Survey
It’s collecting information by sending out questionnaires by mail or at public places. It is also
a cheaper and less time consuming way, it’s a qualitative research the negative thing about
it’s a voluntary work so you can’t make a person do this and you will see this mostly at a
restaurant or the streets for a feedback. With a survey you will probably see this in a shop
like Agros and they might ask you if they’re service were satisfactory or not.

*Interview
It’s either face to face or on the telephone way of getting peoples information or either
getting a job or getting the information is needed. You would see this in a job interview
where they ask the person questions and the person can tell theircharacteristics feature.
The negative thing is that with a telephonic interview you won’t be able to view the person
and see if they are actually well presented, the negative aspect of this is that you need to
write things down or to record the interview and it’s time consuming as you will have to be
quick writing it down and re-reading through it and to play back the recording to see it.

*Sampling
Sampling is a great way of finding out the customer’s feedback of a product when they can
sample it themselves and find way of improvement, you will see this at a street or shops.
When a new product is being launched most of the time they give a taste taster of the new
product for future customers they would want to attract. For example they might give a
taster about a new coffee product at shops or coffee shops and see the feedback they
receive. This is more of qualitative research.

*Observing
It’s where you observe a product without interfering without changing till the observations
is over. For example a toy company, a child plays with the toy and you watch how they play
and observe them. You can say it’s like an experiment. You also get qualitative and
quantitative data. The only negative aspect of this is if the product is not suitable or safe to
carry on with the experiment the observation will be over and you will not be able to collect
the new information and data that is needed.
Secondary research is already existing documented and collected information and data
done by someone else and you can easily find information you need on the internet or
either from the library.

Here’s some example of secondary research methods:
*Library
A library is a quiet place with books and a wide range of already collected information. The
advantage of using the library for your research its reliable and you have vast amounts of
free information but the negative thing about library is it’s time consuming as you have to
look through and search for yourself.

*Internet
The internet is a world wide web with a stream of websites and blogs that can be used for
research on media production and content. The advantage of using the internet it’s quick to
find information, easy to download and print information and easier to search specific
information. A disadvantage is that some sources are not reliable and can produce too much
information that might be unnecessary.
*Searching archives
Searching archives area collection of documents and records giving information about a
place, institution, a group of people or old media products/productions. The advantage is its
good for historical information but the disadvantage is that the information can be outdated
as many people these days don’t write document or records as they’re mostly digitalnow.
This report shows the difference between primary and secondary research and shows the
different research methods that can be used for media and what they are. These different
research methods can help me on this course by helping me find the different and the right
information and data that I will be needing on this course.
