This document discusses facts about global hunger, the effects of hunger, and actions being taken to address it. It states that over 900 million people do not have enough food and most live in developing countries. Hunger has negative health and economic impacts. To combat hunger, organizations like Action Against Hunger and World Vision run programs that provide food, water, and long-term solutions to over 40 countries annually, benefiting millions of people. Individuals also take action through initiatives like a cross-country run to raise hunger awareness.
2. FACTS
According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations) news release
on 14 September 2010, 925 million people do not
have enough to eat - more than the populations
of USA, Canada and the European Union.
98 percent of the world's hungry live in developing
countries.
65 percent of the world's hungry live in only seven
countries: India, China, the Democratic Republic
of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and
Ethiopia.
According to the Community Food Survey
conducted by Food for All (local youth group),
almost 12000 households in Singapore currently
rely on supplementary food rations - dried food
packets or cooked meals - in the country.
3. EFFECTS
Number One Risk to Health - Today, almost one
person in six does not get enough food to be healthy
and lead an active life, making hunger and
malnutrition the number one risk to health worldwide
- greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis
combined. As well as the obvious sort of hunger
resulting from an empty stomach, there is also the
hidden hunger of micronutrient deficiencies which
make people susceptible to infectious diseases,
impair physical and mental development, reduce
their labour productivity and increase the risk of
premature death.
Economic Repercussions - Hunger does not only
weigh on the individual. It also imposes a crushing
economic burden on the developing world.
Economists estimate that every child whose physical
and mental development is stunted by hunger and
malnutrition stands to lose 5-10 percent in lifetime
earnings.
4. ACTIONS
