TV still in the lead - but TV 2.0: Innovation in online video
how much of this is ambient
background TV?
Intro
As of October 2008, 13.5 billion videos were watched online.
Nielsen report on 2008
That is a 45% rise on the number watched in October 2007
Online video up 15% to 3 hours per month
Time shifted video up 11% to 7 hours per month
Traditional TV up by 3.6% to 151 hours per month
Suggests that mobile TV will surge tenfold its current rate to 2013
Pew report on 2008
48% of internet users have used video-sharing sites such as YouTube
On an average day, the number of users of video sites doubled from the end of 2007 to the
end of 2008.
Comscore for January 2009
76.8 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.
The average online video viewer watched 6 hours in January
100.9 million viewers watched 6.3 billion videos on YouTube.com (62.6 videos per viewer)
The duration of the average online video was 3.5 minutes, up from 3.2 minutes in December.
Mashable.com prediction for 2009
After a few years of “this is the year,” mobile video breaks into the mainstream. The continued success of Apple’s 3G iPhone
along with the gaggle of smartphones chasing it (e.g. Blackberry Storm) drives the adoption of mobile video consumption.
Expect premium video sites like Hulu and CBS’s TV.com to offer iPhone video applications to their growing audiences.
