Hitachi release of its re-engineered VSP firmware has shattered previous conviction that traditional disk drive storage system could not take advantage of flash.We raised the VSP scalability to more than 1,000,000 random read IOPS in August 2012….Just a few months ago, this level of performance could only be achieved using all-flash appliance.While initially attractive, IT executives recognize the value of performance but are not interested in adding a new vendor or platform.Our customers are telling us they want the benefits of flash but they can not afford to add more headcount to use another set of tools.Ultimately, our customers are saying that their budget limitations require the deployment of efficient technology, it isa not sustainable to deploy silos of flash capacity dedicated to a few hosts..
The Hitachi VSP sees the flash module as just another flash device and will manage these FMDs like an SSD or a disk drive.RAID-5 is the recommended configuration with FMDs but like any other SDD or HDD, customers can elect any RAID type of their choice….In total, a VSP can support up to 192 FMDs distributed in 4 flash chassis for a total of more than 300TB of flash using the 1.6TB FMD or 600TB of flash using the 3.2TB FMD
In these challenging times, our customers told us that:the #1 obstacle to the adoption of flash was the price premium compared to a traditional 15K HDD,It is too costly and not sustainable to use all-flash appliance dedicated to few hosts…And due to their high growth rate, that flash caching acceleration was less and less effective for typical open system application. Customer are reporting in best case , cache hit ratio are in the teen and trending down. While many implementations of flash are available in the market place; we designed Hitachi Accelerated Flash storage for use as a high performance flash tier to deliver a better return on the investment and improved efficiency requested by our customer to support their current data growth….
With Hitachi Dynamic Tiering software the complexities and overhead of implementing data lifecycle management and optimizing use of tiered storage are solved. Dynamic Tiering software simplifies storage administration by eliminating the need for time consuming manual data classification and movement of data to optimize usage of tiered storage.Hitachi Accelerated Flash storage enhancement the value of HDT by increasing the random I/O throughput of a parity group by 4x, doubling the bandwidth and increasing the tier zero capacity by 4x (1.6TB FMD) or 8x (3.2TB FMD) compared to a 400GB SFF MLC SSD
Each FMD is powered by new Hitachi embedded flash controller…..This new multi-core flash controller is designed to drive up to 128 flash chip and can perform inline writes compression to extend the life of MLC flash memory and deliver faster formatting.Additionally, adaptive data refresh capability insure data integrity while minimizing further writes on memory.
