Have you ever been to a noisy bar,
restaurant, or concert where the noise
levels seem to increase as the night
goes on? You may find yourself talking
louder and louder to be heard, or
putting your ear close to someone’s
face in order to hear his conversation. You may notice your voice
beginning to strain and you start to feel fatigued.
As the night goes on and more and more people are talking, the
venue cranks up the music even louder, making it even more
difficult to communicate. On your drive home, in the quiet of the
car, you notice a hissing or ringing in your ears (tinnitus). You
turn on the radio to drown out the ringing in your ears, but you
also notice the music on the radio sounds muffled.
The ringing in your ears and the muffled hearing will likely
resolve itself the following day, and you may think everything is
back to normal. You may even forget all about it, until you enter
your car again and are startled by the extremely loud level of
your radio. You didn’t realize, the previous night, that you had it
cranked up so loudly.

Even still, you may likely think the whole evening was harmless.

in the ears or temporary muffled hearing--is actually a sign of
