What do we have to offer?
We offer mentors who are passionate about their subjects

Our mentor-teachers are very special people here at HEART Academy. They will partner with you in teaching their
favorite subjects.

They commit to:


 advance the kingdom of God by filtering all subject matter through a Christian worldview


 reflect the highest moral standards in all conduct and interactions


 strive for excellence in all interactions with, and modes of assessment for students


 partner with parents in teaching their children


 offer support, training and expertise to families for a Lifestyle of Skillful Living

We offer elementary classes for grades 3-6 called Lower Academy

Our philosophy in the 3-6 grades tends more toward the co-op method. These classes are taught at an elementary level
and come together every other week for 16 weeks. Our teaching focus is to do hands-on projects, public speaking and
having fun!

We offer junior high and high school courses for grades 7-12 called Upper Academy

We offer core and enrichment classes at HEART. These classes cater to all learning styles of students and provide extra
challenges for accelerated students through honor courses.

We offer honor courses in high school

Honors courses in Language Arts, Communications, Social Sciences, History, and Science are available for gifted and
talented students. Content is qualitatively and quantitatively differentiated: (a) through in-depth coverage, (b) by emphasis
upon critical analysis and related higher-level thinking skills, and (c) by stimulating student responsibility for self-learning
and independent study.

Honors courses make substantial academic demands on students. Students are required to do considerable outside reading
and/or other assignments and to demonstrate the analytical skills and other abilities expected of first-year students in a
strong college program. This experience helps students further develop the intellectual skills and self-discipline they will
need in the future.

We offer a different educational philosophy

Let us focus on the philosophy of what we are attempting to accomplish with one day a week classes. We are following an
educational philosophy of Read - Write - Discuss. This is one reason why we have identified Friday as the day for classes.
We chose Friday as our class time with the expectation that the students have been working through the material the other
four days with their parents. This step of discussion is the main reason we are doing the class time. Research shows that
this step of dialogue moves concept retention from 55-75% up to 75-90+%. It provides the opportunity for students to
demonstrate mastery level understanding of what they have been learning as well. This methodology is the essential part
of each class and will be the focus in all subjects. Even in science, where this is a time to do key labs together, it is also
the time to discuss the results of the lab work and to understand its implications and extensions.

In addition, we strive to be a blessing to the families in helping to evaluate papers and projects.

We offer a different evaluation philosophy

Parent involvement in discussion and evaluation of students' work is a priority. Teachers will be available to parents as
needed, to answer questions, or simply be sounding boards for discussion. We want to do everything we can to assist you
in this endeavor.

A teacher created evaluation will be provided for every student, which may be used as record of accomplishment for
students planning to attend college, and to help you as you ascertain grades for your report cards. All evaluations record
the number of writing and discussion assignments completed, a description of challenges and accomplishments, a review
of writing style and participation, test scores (if any) and recommendations for future work. The student’s name and
course title, date of completion and instructor signature are also included. Evaluations will be sent to the families one or
two weeks after the semester ends. HEART mentors do not provide grades.

There are several ways to calculate high school course credit. Determination before the class begins, of the method to be
used, makes the record keeping process much easier. Feel free to discuss this with us at any time. The most commonly
used method of valuation is based on the number of hours of coursework completed in the year. If you choose to use this
method, it will be helpful to you to keep track of hours spent. An Academic Hour Check–off Sheet is available from Crissi
Allen. Honors Courses are generally valued more highly in transcript GPA calculations because they are more
demanding. Please let your teacher know, immediately, if you will be doing Honors work, so we can help you with your
assessment and grade reporting.

We offer a study hall for those not attending classes

If your student is waiting for a class, they may sign up for our Study Hall. It is mostly reserved for those waiting for the
