What was the life of a gladiator like in the arena? That’s what I wanted to know, so I decided to investigate the lives of two gladiators. I found that they had harsh lives, and that they were dangerous men because of it. And for Mrs. Pangburn, this is Elijah speaking. Teehee!
A gladiator was a man, usually a slave or a prisoner from Rome, who was forced to fight to the death in the arena. The gladiator was named for the gladius , a basic Roman sword.
Gladiators went to a ludus, the Roman name for a gladitorial school. There, the gladiators participated in training fights against other gladiators, with trainers called Doctores supervising. This is where they learned everything before heading to the arena.
The Retiarius and the Secutor were trained to fight each other. They learned fighting techniques, advantages, and how to use their weapons from the Doctores that trained them. The Retiarius learned how to use speed as an advantage, and also his weapons, like the Secutor, who learned to become a chaser. They fought each other in the school, but not to the death.
Below the Colosseum, gladiator weapons and gear were stored. This is where gladiators got the weapons and gear they used in the arena, and the equipment for all gladiators was located underground.
The Secutor was a dangerous gladiator. He was armed with a dagger in his hand, and a helmet on his head. The helmet had small eyeholes, so his face couldn’t be pierced by the trident of the Retiarius. The Secutor had to try and win quickly, as is was extremely hot in the helmet, so he would overheat after a while. Secutor literally means “chaser”, as they have to chase the Retiarius a lot.
The Retiarius was a dangerous gladiator as well. He had a trident to spear his opponents with, and a net to capture them so he could win the fight. He had a backup dagger as well. He was fast, and used speed to his advantage. The Retairius didn’t’ wear much armor, mainly because he didn’t really need it.
Gladiator fight! After the gladiators finished their training, they began fighting in the arena. After years of winning, a gladiator would be released, and given the symbol of freedom, a wooden sword. Occasionally, the Retiarius would fight a Murmillo instead of a Secutor. The Murmillo beat the Retiarius in this picture, and the crowd is influencing the emperor’s decision, wanting the Retiarius to die. If the Emperor chose for the Retiarius to die, the Murmillo would kill him. If the Emperor chose for the Retiarius to live, then both gladiators would survive the fight.
I hope you enjoyed my presentation on gladiators! Those are my reasons for thinking that the Retiarius and the Secutor were dangerous men. A
