2. Where everything starts …
The Olympic Games
were originally called
“Ancient Olympic
Games” and were held in
Olympia, Greece, from
the 8th century BC to
the 4th century AC.
Many things happened in
the middle, but finally in
the 17th century the
name of this event
changed as we know it
nowadays.
3. These three words encourage the athlete to give his heart
or her best during competition, and to view this effort
as a victory in itself
.
To better understand the
motto, we can compare it
with the following well-
known phrase: the most
important thing is not to win
but to take part.
4. Olympics are much more than sporting
excelence…
There are some Values due to
have better competitions and
relationships during the
Olympic Games:
Respect – fair play; knowing
one’s own limits; and taking
care of one’s health.
Excellence – how to give the
best of oneself, on the field of
play or in life; taking part; and
progressing according to one’s
own objectives
Friendship – how, through
sport, to understand each other
despite any differences
5. The
Olympics
against
the war
The Olympic Games
were banned in three
occasions: the edition
of 1916 as a
consequence of the
First World War which
began in 1914 and
finished in 1918. In
1940 and 1944 they
were banned because
of the Second World
War (1939 – 1945).
6. The Olympic Rings
The five Olympic
rings represent
the five
continents
involved in the
Olympics and
were designed in
1912, adopted in
1914 and debuted
at the 1920
Antwerp Olympics
7. Femenine
Pole
Vaulting
Pole vaulting is a track
and field event in which a
person uses a long,
flexible pole as an aid to
leap over a bar. Pole
jumping competitions
were known to the
ancient Greeks, as well as
the Cretans and Celts
An interesting fact it is that it has been
a full medal event at the Olympic Games
since 1896 for men and not for women
until 2000
8. Everybody can compete!
The Paralympic Games are a major
international multi-sport event where athletes
with a physical disability compete; this includes
athletes with mobility
disabilities, amputations, blindness, and cerebral
palsy. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic
Games, which are held immediately following their
respective Olympic Games
9. To know a little bit more…
It wasn't until 1900 that women
were allowed to participate in the
Olympic Games.
The first Olympics covered by
U.S. television was the 1960
Summer Games in Rome by CBS.
The three continents Africa,
South America, and Antarctica have
never hosted the Olympic games.
The oldest Olympic medalist was
Oscar Swahn of Sweden, he won his
last medal at the age of 72.
