3
Storage
Storage holds data, instructions, and
information for future use
A storage medium is the physical
material on which a computer keeps
data, instructions, and information
Pages 238 - 239

Storage

Pages 238 – 239
Figure 6-1

5
Storage
• Capacity is the number of bytes a storage medium
can hold

Page 240
Figure 6-2

6
Storage
• A storage device is the computer hardware that
records and/or retrieves items to and from
storage media
Reading is the process
of transferring items
from a storage medium
into memory

Writing is the process of
transferring items from
memory to a storage
medium
Page 240

7
Storage
• Access time measures the amount of time it takes
a storage device to locate an item on a storage
medium
– 3 factors to determine access time:
• Seek time : time it takes the access arm into position over a
particular
• Head switching : the activation time for the read/write head
over a particular track
• Rotational delay : the read/write head waits until the
desired data on the track moves under it.
Page 240

BENEFIT (ADVANTAGES) OF SECONDARY
STORAGE:
• Space
– Store a roomful of data on disks smaller than the size of a breadbox
• Diskette contains of 500 printed pages
• Optical disk can hold of 500 books

• Reliability
– Data in secondary storage is relatively safe
• Is highly reliable
• More difficult for untrained people to tamper with data store on disk.

• Convenience
– Authorized users can easily and quickly locate data stored on the
computer.

• Economy
– Storage cost:
• Less expensive to store data on disks than to buy and house filling cabinets
• Reliable and safe data is less expensive to maintain
• Greater speed and convenience in filling and retrieving data.
9
MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE:
• Data represented as magnetized spots on surface
of spinning disk
– Spots on disk converted to electrical impulse

• Primary types
– Diskettes
– Hard disks

10
MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE: Diskettes
•
•
•
•

Made of flexible Mylar and coated with iron oxide
Has protection of rigid plastic jacket
3 ½” diskette holds 1.44 MB of data
High-capacity variations
– Sony’s HiFD holds 200 MB
– Imation’s SuperDisk available in 120 and 240 MB versions
– Iomega’s Zip drive available in 100, 250, and 750 MB
versions

11
MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE: Hard Disks
• A hard disk contains one or more inflexible, circular platters
that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, and
information

12
Hard Disks
• Hard disks can
store data using
longitudinal
recording or
perpendicular
recording (store
more data)

13
Hard Disks
• Characteristics of a hard disk
include:
Capacity

Platters

Read/Write
Heads

Cylinders

Sectors and
Tracks

Revolutions
per Minute

Transfer
Rate

Access Time

14
Hard Disks

15
Hard Disks
• The hard disk arms
move the read/write
head, which reads items
and writes items in the
drive
– Location often is
referred to by its
cylinder

16
Hard Disks
• A head crash occurs when a read/write head
touches the surface of a platter
• Always keep a backup of your hard disk

17
Hard Disks
• RAID (redundant array of independent disks) is a
group of two or more integrated hard disks
• A network attached storage (NAS) device is a
server connected to a network with the sole
purpose of providing storage

18
Hard Disks
An external hard disk is a separate freestanding hard disk that connects to your
computer with a cable or wirelessly
A removable hard disk is a hard disk that
you insert and remove from a drive
Internal and external hard disks are available
in miniature sizes (pocket hard drive)
19
Hard Disks
• A disk controller consists of a special-purpose chip and
electronic circuits that control the transfer of
data, instructions, and information from a disk to and
from the system bus and other components of the
computer

Flash Memory Storage
• Flash memory chips are a type of solid state
media and contain no moving parts
• Solid state drives (SSDs) have several advantages
over magnetic hard disks:

Faster access time

  • 2. Objectives Overview Describe the characteristics of an internal hard disk including capacity, platters, read/write heads, cylinders, sectors and tracks, and revolutions per minute Discuss the purpose of network attached storage devices, external and removable hard disks, and hard disk controllers Describe the various types of flash memory storage Describe cloud storage and explain its advantages See Page 237 for Detailed Objectives 2
  • 3. Objectives Overview Describe the characteristics of optical discs Differentiate among various types of optical discs Identify the uses of tape, magnetic stripe cards, smart cards, microfilm and microfiche, and enterprise storage See Page 237 for Detailed Objectives 3
  • 4. Storage Storage holds data, instructions, and information for future use A storage medium is the physical material on which a computer keeps data, instructions, and information Pages 238 - 239 4
  • 5. Storage Pages 238 – 239 Figure 6-1 5
  • 6. Storage • Capacity is the number of bytes a storage medium can hold Page 240 Figure 6-2 6
  • 7. Storage • A storage device is the computer hardware that records and/or retrieves items to and from storage media Reading is the process of transferring items from a storage medium into memory Writing is the process of transferring items from memory to a storage medium Page 240 7
  • 8. Storage • Access time measures the amount of time it takes a storage device to locate an item on a storage medium – 3 factors to determine access time: • Seek time : time it takes the access arm into position over a particular • Head switching : the activation time for the read/write head over a particular track • Rotational delay : the read/write head waits until the desired data on the track moves under it. Page 240 8
  • 9. BENEFIT (ADVANTAGES) OF SECONDARY STORAGE: • Space – Store a roomful of data on disks smaller than the size of a breadbox • Diskette contains of 500 printed pages • Optical disk can hold of 500 books • Reliability – Data in secondary storage is relatively safe • Is highly reliable • More difficult for untrained people to tamper with data store on disk. • Convenience – Authorized users can easily and quickly locate data stored on the computer. • Economy – Storage cost: • Less expensive to store data on disks than to buy and house filling cabinets • Reliable and safe data is less expensive to maintain • Greater speed and convenience in filling and retrieving data. 9
  • 10. MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE: • Data represented as magnetized spots on surface of spinning disk – Spots on disk converted to electrical impulse • Primary types – Diskettes – Hard disks 10
  • 11. MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE: Diskettes • • • • Made of flexible Mylar and coated with iron oxide Has protection of rigid plastic jacket 3 ½” diskette holds 1.44 MB of data High-capacity variations – Sony’s HiFD holds 200 MB – Imation’s SuperDisk available in 120 and 240 MB versions – Iomega’s Zip drive available in 100, 250, and 750 MB versions 11
  • 12. MAGNETIC DISK STORAGE: Hard Disks • A hard disk contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, and information 12
  • 13. Hard Disks • Hard disks can store data using longitudinal recording or perpendicular recording (store more data) 13
  • 14. Hard Disks • Characteristics of a hard disk include: Capacity Platters Read/Write Heads Cylinders Sectors and Tracks Revolutions per Minute Transfer Rate Access Time 14
  • 16. Hard Disks • The hard disk arms move the read/write head, which reads items and writes items in the drive – Location often is referred to by its cylinder 16
  • 17. Hard Disks • A head crash occurs when a read/write head touches the surface of a platter • Always keep a backup of your hard disk 17
  • 18. Hard Disks • RAID (redundant array of independent disks) is a group of two or more integrated hard disks • A network attached storage (NAS) device is a server connected to a network with the sole purpose of providing storage 18
  • 19. Hard Disks An external hard disk is a separate freestanding hard disk that connects to your computer with a cable or wirelessly A removable hard disk is a hard disk that you insert and remove from a drive Internal and external hard disks are available in miniature sizes (pocket hard drive) 19
  • 20. Hard Disks • A disk controller consists of a special-purpose chip and electronic circuits that control the transfer of data, instructions, and information from a disk to and from the system bus and other components of the computer SATA SCSI Page 246 EIDE SAS 20
  • 21. Flash Memory Storage • Flash memory chips are a type of solid state media and contain no moving parts • Solid state drives (SSDs) have several advantages over magnetic hard disks: Faster access time Page 247 Faster transfer rates Generate less heat and consume less power Last longer 21
