7. INGESTION
 Hardest piece to find
 Had to maintain batch tab-delimited text file ingestion
 Needed GUI
OpenWMS by Rutgers
 Web-based, import/export metadata into/out of Fedora
 Beta mapped to MARC, MODS, in-house text – no DC
 Required DC to MODS conversion (not a bad thing)
 Bugs and Loopholes fixed in stable release

8. DISCOVERY LAYER
 Wanted to keep separate from Drupal
 Needed multiple views for different media types
Blacklight with Hydra
 Gems ready to handle indexing from Fedora to Solr
 Facets, views, and display all customizable
 Required rethinking ‘compound’ objects
 Steepest learning curve (for Tyler, anyway)

9. REPOSITORY
 Relatively easy to install/configure
 Good documentation and APIs
 Some limitations for media handling
 It’s repository software, not a digital library

10. LESSONS LEARNED
 Freedom isn’t free
 Open source means you’re in charge
 No, seriously, it’s just you (sometimes)
 Control is a blessing and a curse
 Use the tools you have, even if you are leaving
them behind
 Figure out your timeline, then double it
 There is a difference between brave & foolish, be
very brave and a little foolish.
