Background & Methodology


Background
  Trend Micro wishes to gain insights into Technology & Security use among the general
  consumer population, as well as, among consumers who have children.



Methodology
  Insight Express targeted individuals to ensure every respondent accesses the internet
  for at least one hour a day on a device which they own. Half of the sample also had to
  have at least one child under the age of 18 that is currently living at home.

  The survey was launched in 7 countries:
      • Australia    400 Completes
      • Brazil       400 Completes
      • France       400 Completes
      • India        437 Completes
      • Japan        400 Completes
      • UK           401 Completes
      • USA          401 Completes

Internet Safety for Children
 • 4 out of every 10 parents surveyed believe their children are safe while using the internet.
       • 56% of parents in the UK believe this, while only 12% of parents in Japan agree.
 • Globally, the majority of the parents whose children have an account with social networking sites indicated
   their children‟s online privacy on social networking sites is important, particularly so in the US, the UK and
   Australia.

  • Children in Brazil are joining these sites at a younger age than most other countries, with an average age
    of 9.

• For parents whose children use social networking, those in Brazil are significantly more worried about
  their children‟s privacy on social networking sites than parents elsewhere.

  stating they monitor their children‟s accounts at least once a week.

     controls on social networking sites are adequate in protecting their children‟s internet safety.

     • Globally about 17% of parents have purchased a Smartphone for their children. This percentage is
       highest in Brazil (27%) and lowest in Japan (5%).
     • On average, Brazilian parents who have purchased a Smartphone for their children did so when their
       child was 13 (Low base for all countries except Brazil).

       their child guidance on how to use their phone safely & responsibly. About 6 in 10 indicated they limit the
       number of minutes/text messages on their children‟s account (Low base for all countries except Brazil).

  • Familiarity with training apps that educate children about safe use of Smartphone is low among parents.
    Globally only 1 out of every 5 parents surveyed stated they were familiar with such apps.
  • Globally 25% of parents surveyed indicated they would be likely to purchase such an app. Likelihood to
    purchase is significantly higher in Brazil than in other countries.

  • 2. Background & Methodology Background Trend Micro wishes to gain insights into Technology & Security use among the general consumer population, as well as, among consumers who have children. Methodology Insight Express targeted individuals to ensure every respondent accesses the internet for at least one hour a day on a device which they own. Half of the sample also had to have at least one child under the age of 18 that is currently living at home. Internet Safety for Children • 4 out of every 10 parents surveyed believe their children are safe while using the internet. • 56% of parents in the UK believe this, while only 12% of parents in Japan agree. • Globally, the majority of the parents whose children have an account with social networking sites indicated their children‟s online privacy on social networking sites is important, particularly so in the US, the UK and Australia.
