2. Copyright Issues To give less problems and issues with copyright, I decided to look for royalty free music online and googled it. Unfortunately whilst searching and already finding suitable pieces for our film opening, I discovered that I had to pay approximately thirty pounds for each piece and scrapping what I had chosen already, had to start again.
3. Free Royalty Free Music I then found incompetech.com which offers royalty free music and the music is also free to use, as long as you credit the creator. It had a fair range of genres and I could even search for feel. I looked on a few other sites similar to this but found that this site had the most free music and variety of tunes. It also suited the feel and kind of tune I wanted to add to our film. I browsed by genre of horror, and also searched by feel: eerie, suspenseful, unnerving.
4. Copyright Issue Solved The organiser has less of a problem as only one permission letter must be written to the recording company of the intro song used at points A & B. N.E.R.D.’s recording company is currently Star Trak Entertainment, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group and distributed by Interscope Records. Copyright for all the other songs isn’t a problem as they’re all from one person and site. It can be solved simply by just crediting the creator, as requested in the site’s term and conditions policy/FAQ.
5. Music By Scene I went back to the script and envisioned it in my head, and picked out the different moments that I wanted different music for. I split the moments where there would be actual music as opposed to silence or only dialogue and background noise into seven.
6. A & B: The Opening The opening of the film as it just starts up (A) and the introduction as Krissy talks into the camera and starts filming everyone (B). I wanted this to be a youthful song, slow and relaxed as they’re camping and also quite upbeat; this lulls the audience into a false sense of comfort, as the killings will be quite fast and sudden, the theme dark. Then after everyone ducks being filmed and Kelly poses for the camera, the music starts to fade out (B) and cuts off as she stares suddenly to the side feeling something’s watching her. The music would stay the same but it starts at A and fades in at B. It plays again whilst the others tease Kelly for being paranoid and when she walks off, but much quieter and at the same time a subtle dark song plays over it and louder (C). You Know What – N.E.R.D. / There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – The Smiths / The Pursuit of Happiness – Kid Cudi Above are the possible songs, and in the end I chose You Know What – N.E.R.D. As it was quite upbeat and something teens would listen to, contrasted well to the darkness of the later tunes and also faded in and out smoothly. A A B
7. (C) Kelly stares to the side and (D) walks off A/B will have faded out and cut for a while when Kelly senses something watches her. C starts to play (Quinn’s Song: First Night) and it should be a rather subtle piece, quiet yet dark. I wanted it to be something not outright violent and jerky but more quiet and unnerving as it builds up. D acts the same way (Redletter) but is a different tune played in conjunction with C, and starts playing when Kelly walks off heightening the sense that something is off. C D
8. (E) Kelly gets cut & (F) Final Moment and Blackout (E) should feel suspenseful and uneasy, more movement and add to the feeling of being watched and being stalked. This plays when the girls hear Kelly’s scream when she’s cut, and running to her they all crowd around. I chose several songs as they all had different effects I wanted to combine: (Interloper; Scissors; Bump In The Night) (F) plays in the final few moments with again a variety of tunes: when Krissy asks where her camera is gone and we switch to HANDHELD view. The sudden ‘BOOMs’ should start as the heavy breathing does and escalate until the blackout, then continue playing a very discordant and jerky sound. (Slow Ticking Clock; Right Behind You) E F
