The document summarizes the results of a survey of 20 people about their music preferences and magazine reading habits. Key findings include that most respondents preferred rock music, regularly bought Q or Kerrang magazines, and wanted a hypothetical new magazine to be published monthly and incorporate bands they like and social media interaction. This gives guidance on the target demographic and features to include in a new music magazine.
2. Age and sex
• Out of those surveyed both genders were relatively
equally represented, with 12 women and eight men.
This suggests that both genders are interested in
similar music and so my magazine will be aimed at
both genders. The ages of those surveyed are as
follows:
• 16- 14
• 17- 4
• 18- 2
3. What is your preferred genre of music?
• When asked about their favourite genre of music
thirteen said rock, four said metal, two said indie and
one said pop. This suggests that most people of this
age group prefer rock. This means that my magazine
will focus on rock.
4. Do you regularly buy a music magazine? If
so, which magazine?
• When asked whether or not they buy a music
magazine regularly eighteen said yes. Of those
eighteen nine said Q, seven said kerrang and two
said NME. This means that both Q and kerrang are
very popular with my intended target audience and
would be good models to base my magazine on
5. If you regularly buy a music magazine- do you listen
to your magazine’s radio station?
• When asked if they listened to their magazine’s radio
station fourteen said yes, three said no, two said
sometimes and one said they didn’t know about it.
This indicates that including a radio station as part of
my design would be a popular idea.
6. What are your favourite bands/artists?
• The results for the most popular artists (according to
my survey) are:
• Shinedown- 18
• Alter bridge- 15
• Avenged sevenfold- 19
• Linkin park- 14
• Theory of a deadman- 12
• Biffy clyro- 7
• This gives me an idea as to what bands and artists to
include in my magazine.
7. How often would you want a music magazine
published?
• When asked how often they would want a music
magazine published three said weekly, two said biweekly and fifteen said monthly. This clearly shows
that most people would want a magazine published
monthly, meaning that my magazine will be
published monthly.
8. What social networks do you regularly
use?
• Out of the twenty people surveyed all of them said
facebook, sixteen said twitter and ten said google
plus. This suggests that incorporating social networks
as part of the magazines interactivity would be
successful. This also means that advertising would be
cheaper and spread faster.
9. What would encourage you to buy one music magazine
over another?
• The things that would attract people to buy my
magazine are: bands they like, a noticeable logo, a
good colour scheme, contests, free gifts and special
offers or content. This then gives me an outline for
what sort of cover lines to include on my front cover
and additional articles for my contents page.
10. How much would you be willing to pay for a music
magazine?
• When asked how much they would be willing to pay
for a music magazine the prices ranged from £1 to
£3.50. This is around the price of similar magazines
so is a good guideline for how much my magazine
should cost.
11. What influences you when buying a new
product?
• When asked how they found out about new bands
the answers were mainly friends, social networking
advertisements and special offers. This shows that
using social networks would be essential in
advertising, and using social networks as part of the
magazines interactivity would be a good way of doing
this.
12. What could current music magazines do to make
reading more enjoyable?
• When asked what current magazines could do to
make reading more enjoyable the answers were:
make it more interactive, give us more between
issues,
