Solar power prices collapsed last year. They dropped nearly 50
percent in 2009, and analysts predict prices could drop another 20
percent in 2010, helping the industry become cost-competitive with
other energy resources but squeezing some companies out of
business. The economic downturn and falling power demand in the
United States and Europe have contributed to the price collapse, but
the major cost driver has been the fluctuating supply of polysilicon,
the primary raw material used to develop solar energy units.
Polysilicon has gone from a major shortage to massive oversupply,
and bank analysts have projected an oversupply of polysilicon until
2012
Thin-film PV solar cells built from a compound called cadmium
telluride have a more cost-effective manufacturing process. That has
helped companies to build at greater scale and drive down costs.…..

2. Solar energy investment increase to 8.2 million
Morgan Solar, a solar energy start-up company in Toronto,
has increased its first-round investment from the USD $4.7
million as announced in October 2009 to USD $8.2 million.
The funds will be utilized for the development and
commercial release of the company’s Sun Simba HCPV, a
unique Concentrated Photovoltaic solar panel. The Sun
Simba HCPV is a highly efficient and inexpensive solar
panel used for distributed generation and utility scale solar

3. Proposed Solar Farm Edison New Jersey
A gigantic solar farm with about 8,500 panels to be erected on 5.7
acres in Edison is part of a $50 million investment statewide
planned by Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) in renewable
solar energy. PSE&G is seeking approval from local officials for the
proposed project. The projects will generate many local jobs
connected to engineering, design, construction and installation of

Former Polaroid Factory Now a Solar Panel Plant
New Bedford, Mass., a shuttered plant that once rolled out
Polaroid film is up and running again. Except this time, the
plant isn't producing film -- it's making extremely thin flexible
solar panels. Back in 2008, the factory got a second chance as
Konarka Technologies Inc., converted the equipment to make
what it calls "power plastic." According to NPR's "Morning
Edition," the sheets can be used as fabric, say for a cell-phone-
charging window in a purse or briefcase, or as an integrated

Companies Merge to Make Solar Power more affordable!
Three companies are teaming up to try make one alternative—
solar power — more attractive; Vaugha Avacos Solar Energy,
DuRock Allfacing International and Sanyo Canada are partnering to
promote the union of two technologies that could make solar panels
work better.
Sanyo says its HIT panels generate 30 percent more electricity
because they capture ambient and reflected light on the backside of
the panel, as well as direct sunlight from the front. Used in

to capture even more light.
In addition, the Tio-Coating helps solve another problem for the
panels.
“Ironically, one of the downsides to solar technology in general is
that (solar panels) tend not to perform as well in hotter situations,”
says Daniel Caunter, enterprise solutions strategist at Sanyo Canada.
But because the coating prevents the building from absorbing
sunlight and radiating it as heat, the panels stay cooler.
It’s still difficult to say exactly how much more electricity the
HIT/Tio-Coat combination produces compared to other solar

6. Military shift to Solar Power Proposes to decrease Vulnerability
On January 5, members of Ohio’s Air National Guard's 180th Fighter
Wing joined Representative Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) to dedicate
Phase IV of the unit’s massive, ground-mounted solar array currently
rated at 1.2 megawatts.
The solar farm, which will provide 37 percent of the electric needs of
the base, is the largest of its kind at any Air National Guard station in
the United States, and also the largest installed or projected solar
installation in the state. The next largest is Dayton Power and Light’s
proposed 1.1-megawatt array near its Yankee substation in
Washington Township.
Guardsmen have been installing the 16,000 thin-film panels since the
fall of 2007. The panels are manufactured by Perrysburg, Ohio-based
First Solar, and installed under the guidance of Walbridge, Ohio-based
