You need to be able to understand where we find
                information in the Australian Standards

Jun 18, 2012 14
Where do we find a trap?
Traps are located under
  basins, sinks, showers,
  baths etc
The plumbing code states
  “The drainage discharge
  pipe from all sanitary
  fixtures will be
  constructed with a trap,
  or a self sealing
  mechanical device”

Jun 18, 2012 15
TRAPPING THE FIXTURE
 One type of trap is installed after the
         fixture is installed.
 One type of trap is formed in the fixture
as part of the manufacturing, for
example. (Urinals, Pans etc) This type is
         called an integral trap

How do they work?
A “U” shaped bend forms a water seal to
 prevent odours, bacteria's and sewer
gasses from pipe system coming back into
 buildings.
Read A.S. 3500 CL. 6.4.2 Retained Water
 Seal

Jun 18, 2012 20
How does it work?
A “U” bend in the pipe helps to maintain a
water seal that prevents the gas from the
sewer getting back through the fixture.

Jun 18, 2012 21
What is the water seal?
                           The water will discharge
                             once it gets to the
                             spill level.
                           The “U” shaped pipe
                             under that will hold a
                             water seal

Jun 18, 2012 22
THE WATER SEAL
The designed depth of the water
seal in a W.C. and other 100 mm
           traps is 50mm, +/- 5mm and
         75mm (-5 +35mm) for all other
                    fixture traps.
After a fixture has been used and
       the discharge of water completed,
the trap must maintain a water
seal with a 25mm min. depth.

INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES
1/ Should the discharge pipe, be connected to
a fixture, before or after the fixture is fixed in
     place ?

 Depending on the circumstances it may be
necessary to install the discharge pipe before
the fixture has even been installed. In some
instances it may be considered a better option if
the pipe is installed after the fixture has been
     installed

4/ In reference to the discharge pipe,
what information could you gain from a
  site inspection ?
      Environmental factors such as:-
 exposed to excessive heat from the sun or other heat source,
such as a furnace in a factory
 damaged by a vehicle
 at a factory where a forklift could crash into the unprotected
               pipe
 having exposure to corrosive chemicals such as acids

5/ When installing a pipe that is to pass
through a timber beam, why is it
regarded better practice to position the
pipe through the centre, rather than
cutting out the side of the timber ?
 As cutting through the side has the
  potential of weakening the overall
  structure.

  • 30. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES QUESTIONS Jun 18, 2012 30
  • 31. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 1/ Should the discharge pipe, be connected to a fixture, before or after the fixture is fixed in place ?  Depending on the circumstances it may be necessary to install the discharge pipe before the fixture has even been installed. In some instances it may be considered a better option if the pipe is installed after the fixture has been installed Jun 18, 2012 31
  • 32. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 2/ List 6 factors, that may determine the materials suitable for a given job.  Type of usage  Class of discharge  Properties of liquids conveyed  Soil type and conditions  Environment factors  Temperature Jun 18, 2012 32
  • 33. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 3/ Copper pipe is available in different ‘types’. Which ‘type’ has the thickest wall thickness ?  Type ‘A’ Jun 18, 2012 33
  • 34. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 4/ In reference to the discharge pipe, what information could you gain from a site inspection ? Environmental factors such as:-  exposed to excessive heat from the sun or other heat source, such as a furnace in a factory  damaged by a vehicle  at a factory where a forklift could crash into the unprotected pipe  having exposure to corrosive chemicals such as acids Jun 18, 2012 34
  • 35. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 5/ When installing a pipe that is to pass through a timber beam, why is it regarded better practice to position the pipe through the centre, rather than cutting out the side of the timber ?  As cutting through the side has the potential of weakening the overall structure. Jun 18, 2012 35
  • 36. INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPES 6/ Calculate the fall of a 50mm discharge pipe which is to be run 2.8 metres, at the minimum grade allowable by the AS 3500.2.  70mm Jun 18, 2012 36
