- What a change we’ve seen over the past 30 years! Most of us on the call were at least alive during the 80s, and some of us were even working during that time! Your state’s data may look similar to these percentages. There are definitely successes to celebrate: Michigan’s smoke-free workplaces law went into effect in May 2010. Though our smoking rates continue to decrease, our overweight and obesity rates continue to climb. We have a bit of work to do as a state before we see 100% compliance with national recommendations in each of these categories. A 1/3 of all US deaths are attributable to these three modifiable, health-damaging behaviors: tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and poor eating habits. . The workplace is an ideal environment for cultivating a healthy lifestyle. 45% of a person’s waking hours are spent in the workplace and 82% of the US population is linked in someway to a worksite. Worksites can be environments that promote health or that create barriers to health. (Healthy Workforce 2010. Partners for Prevention 2001, as reported in Arkansas State of Wellness presentation) Chronic diseases are prevalent in our worksites: almost 1 out of every 2 adults has at lest one chronic illness (Wu SY, Green A. Accessed online 9/14/2011 at http://www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/overview/index.htm) They cost employers a bunch of money: They cause lost productivity (in absenteeism and presenteeism): cancer - $39.8 billion to lost productivity; obesity $56 billion to lost productivity; CVD & stroke - $142.5 billion to lost productivity; risk factors such as smoking – more than $80 billion and poor nutrition - $9 billion related to heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes (CDC as reported in Worksite Wellness in Arkansas) And they cost lives: chronic diseases are the 7 out of 10 deaths among Americans each year are from chronic diseases. Heart disease, cancer and stroke account for more than 50% of all deaths each year (National Vital Statistics as reported by CDC. - FLASHBACK TO THE 1980s: President Regan led our country Fitness fads: In the 80s, Jane Fonda, leg warmers and head bands took over as aerobics classes sprouted up all over the country, which were then followed by "low impact" step classes. - The WCHP program spanned the entire decade of the 1990s and into the turn of the century. Before we go into the 2000s, I wanted to share the picture I call my “ergo Christi” picture. When I first looked at this picture I wondered what the heck I was doing with my neck in that awkward position. This in fact is me in my 1990s workplace. Notice the huge typewriter in the background. At least I had a computer, but that’s pretty huge, too. It was at this worksite I was introduced to worksite wellness. I was part of a team called LBLTRNU (I’ll be healthier than you). I credit my teammate for naming our team (very clever person).

- One of the worksites in the project making use of the stairs to increase physical activity opportunities for employees. Albert Kahn I’m usually like the guy in the background: I know the stairs are good for me, but I’m not too happy to use them!
- As I’ve covered, the period of 2000 – 2010 we saw a lot of different worksite projects cross our path. Here’s my strategic plan Christi picture. Not the most flattering, but kind of a nice way to summarize what our experience was for the first 10 years of the new century. Here’s what we’ve done, here’s what we’ve heard, now we make a plan and implement it. Sometimes easier on paper than in real life, as you are completely aware!
