Projects from another perspective
“An estimated 68% of corporate IT
projects are neither on time nor
budget, and they don’t deliver the
originally stated business goals.
Some even claim that during the
last two years, $100 billion to $150
billion of U.S. IT projects have failed
altogether.”

Management,
MITSloan Management Review, Spring 2004

Ingredients of Success
Adequate budget
including training, documentation and conversion.
Alignment with Business Goals:
The strategic objectives of the program should be in
alignment with organization’s business goals.
Clear and concise Deliverables
End-User Involvement
People need to be involved from beginning to end.
Top-down control without bottom-up involvement is a
recipe for disaster.
Adequate Training:
Training is not an expense; it is investment in human
resource.
Change Management:
When changes are prepared for and introduced
gradually, it does not make people insecure and
resentful; it turns them into advocates

Delivering Successful Solutions
AcceleratedSAP Methodology
Description
Accelerated SAP (ASAP) is SAP's standard implementation
methodology. It contains the Roadmap, a step-by-step guide that
incorporates experience from many years of implementing R/3.
Accelerated SAP contains a multitude of tools, accelerators and
useful information to assist all team members in implementing R/3.
Quality checks are incorporated at the end of each phase to easily
monitor deliverables and critical success factors.

Why use a methodological approach to Implementation?
Investing in a new business solution can bring major benefits to an organisation.
The success or failure of a new Solution depends on how well it is implemented.
A recent survey of software implementations showed that over 30% of projects perceived to have failed did so because of a lack of effective project planning.
On the other hand less than 10% of projects perceived to have failed did so because of technology driven causes.
AcceleratedSAP is the SAP Methodology for the Implementation (Initial, Upgrade, Extension) of SAP Solutions and supports cost effective and speedy Implementation of the SAP Solutions
It has the following constituent parts:
AcceleratedSAP (Methodology) Contentthe structured methodology content (processes, procedures, accelerators checklists, links to Standard SAP Documentation, etc. necessary for the Implementation (Initial, upgrade, Extension) of SAP Solutions.
AcceleratedSAP (Methodology) Toolsetthe tools necessary for the Implementation (Initial, Upgrade, Extension, Template, etc. ) of SAP Solutions.
AcceleratedSAP (Methodology) Roadmapsthe guidance and navigation necessary for the Implementation (Initial, upgrade, Extension) of SAP Solutions.
AcceleratedSAP (Methodology) ExpertiseSAP knows SAP best and based on its vast experience provides this knowledge in concentrated form to its customers & partners through AcceleratedSAP.
Describe the structure of the rainbow side and the deliverables assigned to each sub phase.
The SAP Solution Manager is the primary tool designed to support you throughout the implementation of your mySAP.com solution until your solution is productive. The SAP Solution Manager offers central access to the following tools and methodology, which you can use during the implementation of your mySAP.com solution:
Preconfigured content for the evaluation and implementation of e-business solutions
AcceleratedSAP (ASAP) methodology for the implementation of e-business solutions
Tried and tested implementation and test tools, for example, the Implementation Guide (IMG) or the Test Workbench
The SAP Solution Manager also provides an authoring environment that can be used to create an e-business solution specific to your enterprise.
Integration
As you prepare for your SAP implementation, you must address several important issues at the beginning of the project. These include:
Defining your project goals and objectives
Clarifying the scope of your implementation
Defining your implementation strategy
Defining the overall project schedule and implementation sequence
Establishing the project organization and committees
Assigning resources
By addressing these issues early in your implementation, you help ensure that the project will proceed efficiently and establish a solid foundation for a successful SAP implementation.
Integration
During this phase, you also:
Refine the original project goals and objectives
Define the baseline scope
Refine the overall project schedule and implementation sequence
Integration
Configure the system in two work packages: Baseline (major scope) and Final (remaining scope). This allows you to work on the other work packages after Baseline confirmation.
During this phase you also
Ensure proper OCM results
Ensure functional and technical support for the production solution
There are two distinct periods of this phase:
Project EndDuring the time when the system is first live, all issues and problems are resolved, transition to the production support team finalized, knowledge transfer completed, and the project signed off.
Continuous ImprovementNow that the project is over, the production support team monitors the system and resolves live business process issues. Proper change management procedures are established and ongoing end user training is conducted. Plans are made to continuously review and improve business processes.
The AcceleratedSAP (ASAP) methodology is proven, repeatable and successful approach to implement SAP solutions in various industries and customer environments. ASAP provide content, tools and expertise developed and collected from thousands of successful implementations. The delivery of ASAP methodology is supported by three key pillars:
1. SAP Solution Composer for mapping customer business requirements to SAP solution capabilities. It delivers over 300 SAP business maps describing both industry and cross-industry solutions in form of Solution Maps and individual Collaborative Business Maps. The tool and associated content is available for customer, partners and also prospects. The tool and its content stays current through on-line content updates.
2. SAP Roadmaps delivering set of SAP Roadmaps composed to fit specific project needs. The composed roadmaps are delivered in HTML format on SAP Service Marketplace or inside the SAP Solution Manager for access by the customer project team.
3. SAP Solution Manager is the customer implementation tool that delivers functionality and content for blueprinting, configuration, testing and operations. Solution Manager replaces the Q&Adb, BPML and other tools from the ValueSAP toolset. It combines functionality of numerous ValueSAP tools in one comprehensive package that also delivers set of new functions and content for newly release SAP Solutions as well as content from the ValueSAP toolset.
Keep in mind:
the tools may change, but the basic approach remains the same
the content may change, but the basic approach remains the same
the roadmaps may change, but the basic approach remains the same
Notes:
What is delivered in each environment
Solution Composer delivers - Solution Maps and Business Scenario Maps
SAP Roadmaps - Implementation (activity and deliverable-based), Global Template, Solution Management (technical implementation), and Upgrade
SAP Solution Manager delivers
Implementation content for specific business scenarios that include - Configuration guides, Process documentation, Business process maps, Test scenarios, Pre-configuration for selected processes
How it fits together
Without the Content it is just an empty framework
Without the Roadmaps it is just a disordered heap of possibly interesting Information
Without the Toolset it is not really usable in a way which helps
