  1. We’ll attempt to address a number of issues today; among these will be the following 1. Do teachers or principals have legal authority to search pupils' lockers? to search their persons? 2. What about the protections guaranteed by §8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ? 3. How can we know what would constitute "reasonable" grounds for a search? 4. What obligations do educators have (under both the Charter and the Young Offenders Act ) to "read pupils their rights"? 5. Does it really matter whether school authorities respect these rights? What are the implications of ignoring them? 6. What other “substantive” Charter rights do students have? How are these important in the “school” context. One of the more misunderstood and mishandled issues in in the area of student rights concerns the searching of students’ lockers, their possessions and their persons.
