Our Speaker: Tammy Bryant Butow, a Principal Site Reliability Engineer @ Gremlin will talk to us about The Road To Resilience: Chaos Engineering, Disaster Recovery & GameDays. Abstract: Over the years much research has been conducted and books have been written on how to improve the resilience of our software. This tech talk will dive deep into three key practices that improve the key measures of tempo and stability (outlined in Accelerate). These 3 practices are Chaos Engineering, Disaster Recovery and GameDays. You'll learn practical tips that you can put into action focused on resource consumption, capacity planning, region failover, decoupling services and deployment pain. You'll also hear how you can get certified in Chaos Engineering - whether you are a beginner or have many years of experience. Talks about #sre, #tech, #chaosengineering, #performanceengineering, and #sitereliabilityengineering

Serverless applications are the epitome of highly distributed, microservices applications. Execution happens everywhere - both inside and outside the serverless compute environment. For example, your functions could be triggered by an external service, then execute some code within AWS Lambda, then send a request over to a database, which *then* requires AWS Lambda to perform an update in a second data store. You might be able to predict and design for certain troublesome issues but there are many, many more that you probably will not be able to easily plan for. How do you build a resilient system under these highly distributed circumstances? The answer is chaos engineering. Join us as we walk through: The unique challenges of building a highly resilient serverless app Why you need to design for problems you cannot predict and cannot easily test for How you can use chaos engineering to build a resilient serverless application How you can take advantage of out of the box and third-party observability solutions to measure the impact of chaos experiments.

Amazon CloudFront AWS’s easy-to-use and cost-effective content delivery service, recently added support for five additional HTTP methods: POST, PUT, DELETE, OPTIONS and PATCH. This means you can now use CloudFront to accelerate data uploaded from end users, improving the performance of dynamic and personalized websites that have web forms, comment and login boxes, “add to cart” buttons or other features. In this webinar, we will explain how CloudFront can accelerate your entire website running on Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, an Elastic Load Balancer, or on your own origin server using routes optimized via persistent connections, TCP/IP and other network path optimizations. We will also demo recent CloudFront features such as zone apex support, custom error pages, and content upload (via these additional HTTP methods).

Lambda gives you multi-AZ out-of-the-box, but still, things can go wrong in production. There are region-wide outages, and performance degradation in services your function depends on can cause it to time out or error. And what if you're dealing with downstream systems that just aren't as scalable and can't handle the load you put on them? The bottom line is many things can go wrong and they often do at the worst of times. The goal of building resilient systems is not to prevent failures, but to build systems that can withstand these failures. In this talk, we will look at a number of practices and architectural patterns that can help you build more resilient serverless applications. Such as multi-region, active-active, employing DLQs and surge queues. We'll also see how we can use chaos experiments to help us identify failure modes before they manifest in production

With the wide adoption of micro-services and large-scale distributed systems, architectures have grown increasingly complex and hard to understand. Worse, the software systems running them have become extremely difficult to debug and test, increasing the risk of outages. With these new challenges, new tools are required and since failures have become more and more chaotic in nature, we must turn to chaos engineering in order to reveal failures before they become outages. In this talk, we will make an introduction to chaos engineering, a discipline that promotes breaking things on purpose in order to learn how to build more robust systems and we will deep dive into designing large-scale resilient architectures.

Machine learning (ML) provides innovation for every business. Until recently, developing ML models took time and effort, making it difficult for developers to get started. In this session, we demonstrate how Amazon SageMaker—a fully managed service that enables developers to build, train, and deploy ML models at scale—overcomes these barriers. We review its capabilities across data labeling, model building, model training, tuning, and production hosting. Additionally, Workday—leading provider of enterprise cloud applications for financial management, human capital management, and analytics—shares how it accelerated ML throughout its organization, the benefits gained, and why it standardized on Amazon SageMaker.

We rails people tend to think of Rails as the center-piece of web development. The same thing can be said of .net, Spring/Java Server Faces, Drupal, Python or name-your-web-framework-of-choice-here people. Web frameworks are just a component of web applications, and if you want to succeed you better know the miriads of other components beyond your rockstar code. In my session I will talk about things you must take into account and tools/techniques you should master if you want to make a difference in web development, independently of your development language/framework. The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
