You have the Word of Life” 1 John 1:1-4 (ESV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us. We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy! (The Message) And now they are about to lose Him! But think about it: would we love Him more than Jesus love us? He does. Yet, He said, “it will be better for you”. AUGUSTINE: In his divinity, of course, he is always with us. But unless he went away from us in the body, we would always be able to see his body in the flesh and would never believe in a spiritual way... It was necessary therefore that the form of the servant should be removed from their eyes. For so long as they looked on that form, they thought that Christ was no more than what they saw him to be. Implication: TRANSPORT in time would be no better than what we the Christian have now!
- CHRYSOSTOM: But why didn’t the Spirit come before he departed? He could not come because the curse had not yet been taken away, sin had not yet been forgiven, and everything was still subject to the penalty for it. “It is necessary then,” Jesus says, “that the enmity be put away, that we be reconciled to God and then receive that gift.” But why does he say, “I will send him”? It means, “I will prepare you beforehand to receive him.” For how can that which is everywhere be “sent”? SO DOES IT MEANS THAT THE Holy Spirit has not “Come to us” before this? Yes, He has come “upon” us in the past, for a time (David, Saul, etc.) but not a permanent He come “into” us forever.
- Conscience will convict a man that such things are wrong, but the Holy Spirit convicts of a sin of which conscience would never convict him—the sin of unbelief. Unbelief of Jesus Christ is the greatest of all sins, for it causes the rejection of God’s only means of forgiveness, and thus brings all the condemnation of one’s every sin upon the one who fails to appropriate Christ’s salvation through faith. AUGUSTINE, while UNBELIEVE continues, all other sins are retained, and when it departs all other sins are remitted NOT I was bad, I need to turn over a new leave The righteousness of which the Spirit convicts is not any human righteousness, but Christ’s Righteousness . The Righteousness of Christ is attested to by the fact that He was raised from the dead and has ascended to the Father. Had He been an imposter, as the religious world insisted when they cast Him out, the Father would not have received Him. The fact that the Father did exalt Him to His own right hand demonstrates that He is completely innocent of the charges laid against Him. NOT Avis syndrome: “We try harder.” The Holy Spirit convinces the world that there is such a thing as judgment . The judgment of Satan and the breaking of his power at the cross is proof of that. While Jesus was on the cross, Satan threw everything he had at him, but after dying for our sins Jesus rose from the dead. And according to Ephesians 4:8, “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train, and he gave gifts to men.” He led a victory parade! Satan bruised Christ’s heel, but Christ crushed Satan’s head (cf. Genesis 3:15)! Therefore, Christ now will bring judgment upon those who are part of the world system. NOT without consequence
- NOT Intuition (“A thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning”) Oswald Chambers: Intuition is the power to sense things without reasoning, and is a better guide than what is stated explicitly; but there is something infinitely more satisfactory—the entrance of the Holy Spirit into a man at new birth enabling him to see the Kingdom of God and to enter into it. The Greek word here for “ guide ” is “hodēgeō” which is a compound from the word “hodos” (“way”) and “hēgeomai” (“to lead”). The sense here is one of direction, not instruction. {Illustration} My wife and I, we were on a cruise to the Mexico Riviera for our honeymoon. When we got off the boat, many natives were readily awaited and they all wanted to take us here and there. They want to be our guide. But who can we trust? {Explanations} Guiding imply two sides: the leader and the follower . It requires trust from the followers to the leader. (For if we won’t trust, how could we follow?) 1) Trust usually also increased by multiple sources. Note the plural “ you ” here. The Spirit won’t guide just you, singularly; but also the whole community, many other leaders as well. (The tongues of fire descended on each disciples on Pentecost, during day time, and was observable by all of them at the same time, was a vivid trust-builder that each one of them experience the same Holy Spirit.) 2) And, trust increased by our familiarity with the source. (I trust you, and therefore I will trust the intern you sent). The next sentence said that, “ He will not speak on His own, but will speak whatever he hears ”, and Jesus emphasized this originality two more times in the next two verses with “ He will take what is mine and declare it to you . ” (After Pentecost, the disciples trusted the leading of the Holy Spirit because they know that He is from Jesus, and His guidance will be in the same spirit as Jesus’ own guidance.) {Application & Transition} For most Christians: Discerning the Spirit guidance through the Word and the community of the local church have always been easier. (That’s the common expectation for parishioners in receiving divine direction: go to church).
- Guiding implies two sides (leader and followers), it also implies a transaction that happens between the leader and followers : at least a call, or a signal [wave hand]. That transaction is the word “ declare ” in the text here (which repeated 3 times). The Greek word for “ declare ” is “ anaggelos ”, from “ ana ” for “between”, “among” and “ aggelos ” for “to deliver a message”. The Holy Spirit took the message from God and “ declared ” it to us.
