▫ Resources
▫ Potential barriers
7. A Career Coach is……….
• A Guide
▫ Suggests courses of action
▫ Provides feedback during the process of what is
working and what isn’t.

11. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Understanding self, skills, interests & values
▫ Particular talent that when expressed makes the
world a better place
▫ Something you might gravitate toward during
after-hours activities
▫ People respect you for………
12. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Who am I?
▫ Two approaches to addressing this question
Asking student/employee/client to explore their
individual talents
Using assessment to explore individual preferences
13. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Approach one – consider the following questions:
▫ When have you been most committed, passionate
and enthusiastic?
▫ When have you been most creative?
▫ When have you been most sure of yourself and your
decisions?
▫ What do you consider to be your greatest
accomplishment?
▫ When have others considered you to be most
successful?
▫ When have you enjoyed your work the most?
14. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Approach one – consider the following questions:
▫ What about the world puzzles you or disturbs you
that you could make an impact on?
▫ What jobs do you like to do at work when you have
a choice?
▫ What activities are you drawn towards out of work?
▫ If money were no concern, what would you be
doing?
15. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Approach two– use of assessments:
▫ DiSC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and
Conscientiousness)
▫ “Now Discover Your Strengths” by Buckingham and
Clifton.
** Treat these tests as advisory only
16. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• As you explore your student’s/employees/clients
personality you come to realize who they are is
really determined by the choices they make.
• How they choose to react one way over another,
or to prefer one thing over another.
• Take this one step further and ask:
▫ Why they make the choices they do
When you know the why you begin to see how they
can become fulfilled through the work they do.
17. Phase I - Assessing Self & Preferences
• Putting it all together – ask:
▫ What their talents and strengths are
▫ The talents they achieve the most with
▫ The activities they get the most satisfaction from;
The type of activity the assessment – if applicable –
moves them toward

39. Final Thoughts
Remember the Career Journey is as dynamic as you
are. As circumstances change, so does your plan.
Rather than scrapping the plan all together, make
changes along the way to keep it current and
relevant.
