Dedicated R&E Network Connects Pakistan And The US
1. DEDICATED R&E NETWORK CONNECTS PAKISTAN AND THE US
A project funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Higher Education
Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has deployed a high-performance international research and
education (R&E) network connection between PERN – and its successor network PERN2 –
and the global research and education network community.
The physical network consists of a STM-1 (155Mbps) connection between the PERN/PERN2
connection point in Karachi, Pakistan and the TEIN2 landing point in Singapore. Connectivity
in Singapore is provided by the European Commission TEIN2 Project. From Singapore,
high-performance bandwidth is available to Tokyo, the various networks of the Asia Pacific
Advanced Network consortium (APAN), and Europe via the TEIN2 Project. From Tokyo, transit
is available to the US via the NSF-funded TransPAC2 Project.
The project is now turning its attention to developing and enhancing US-Pakistan research and
education collaborations.
