‘Delhi Sustainable Development Summit’
(DSDS) which is a flagship event of TERI,
The Energy and Resources Institute,
from 6th February to 8th February 2014
that kicked off at Hotel Taj Palace, New
Delhi. The theme of this year’s Summit
was “Attaining Food, Water, and Energy
Security for All”.
His address was focussed on the
sustainability of the oceans and the blue
economy, which was well greeted by the
summit as conventionally the attention of
DSDS has been on land-based concerns.
In his speech, Vice-President Faure
stressed that “We small islands know
very well that it is the oceans that drive
the global climate, it is the oceans that
contributes significantly to the air that
we breathe, and the food that we eat. It is
the oceans that connect us through trade
routes. And whilst humankind has been
notorious in exploiting and polluting our
oceans, we have yet to define a framework
for the sustainable management of the
oceans.”
He ended his speech by saying that
“Our blue economy is the green economy.
It is about ocean conservation and
sustainable use; it is about creating blue
jobs, it is about eradication of poverty,
it is about obtaining more equitable
revenue from our resources, it is about
creating a link between what we do

Zambia to re-capitalise
copper mines
LUSAKA:
President
Michael Sata of Zambia
says his government will
re-capitalise the Zambia
consolidated copper mines,
zccm Investment Holdings.
His Facebook message
says the state will inject
some 275-million kwacha
(55-million us dollars)
into the firm, with a view
to enhance value addition
in the gemstone mining
sub-sector. President Sata
says the government wants
value addition through
cutting and polishing in the
gemstone sub-sector, in line
with the ruling Patriotic
front, PF Manifesto. He
says his administration is
determined to extract huge
benefits for the Zambian
people from the country's
rich natural resources.
President Sata also
says the developments in
the gemstone sub-sector
are just some of the things
he insisted on doing when
he became Head of State.
He says value addition
in gemstones and other
minerals was part of the PF
campaign promises, which
some pessimists doubted at
the time.
Mr. Sata also says the
doubters have, however,
been
proved
wrong
because Zambia has started
auctioning
gemstones
locally, which is all a result
of his bold decisions. Last
year, Zambia managed to
hold three auction sales
of gemstones from Kagem
Mines; and more than
six-million-800-thousand

were sold for a total of

Namibia Establishes
single window initiative
WINDHOEK: The government
of Namibia has approved the
establishment of a National
Single Window Initiative and
designated the Ministry of Trade
and Industry to spearhead the
scheme. State radio, NBC News,
says the National Single Window
Initiative is a new and innovative
approach to border processing
and clearance to improve the
competitiveness of cross-border
trade. It says Single Window is
defined as a facility that allows
parties involved in trade and
transport to lodge standardised
information and documents
with a single entry point to fulfil
all export, and transit-related
regulatory
requirements.
A statement issued by the
Ministry of Information and
Communication Technology
says the Cabinet approved the
setting up a national steering
committee at the Permanent
Secretary level.
The Cabinet also approved
appointment of a consultant
by the Trade and Industry
Ministry to do the cost and
benefit analysis; and advice
on the model to be considered
appropriate for Namibia's
training environment. The
Single Window Initiative will
be linked to the one-stop
border posts concept to achieve
competitiveness in Namibia;
as well as to streamline and
accelerate trade in the rest of
Southern African Development
Community.

land in West Africa. It shares
borders with three countries
that include Benin, Burkina Faso
and Ghana. It has a coastline in
the south along the Bight of Benin

Agriculture
Agriculture is the primary
economic activity of Togo, with a
GDP contribution of 40%, 20%, of
export income and employment

population is employed

cassava, rice, peanuts
and sorghum. Coffee,

model in South Africa, giving
encouragement to the domestic
auto sector after strikes that
held last year. BMW expressed
that wage related strikes in
2013 hindered expansion plans
in the country. On the other
hand, Toyota emphasized on
investment as a part of an
expansion plan that was initiated
in 2012. Commenting on the
investment, Toyota expressed,
“The investment is the second
to be announced in the current
phase of capital expansion that
started with the 363 million rand
new parts distribution centre in
Gauteng in 2012.”

MTN TO EXPAND ITS
NETWORK THROUGH
INVESTMENT
With an endeavor to maintain its rank
as the leading mobile service provider,
eminent telecommunication company,
MTN Rwanda is all set to invest at least
$20 million. As articulated by Ebenezer
Asante, CEO, MTN has already invested
above approximately $200 million in the
last five years to enhance its network
coverage in different corners of the
country. He added, “The past year was
the right time for MTN Rwanda to sell
off its towers and focus on what we do
best”. Worth mentioning, the pioneer
sustained to rule the domestic market
with more than 3 million subscribers
with 5% growth in 2013 even at the
time when telecommunication industry
was in crisis. Further, the MTN Mobile
Money users breaking all the records
touched 1 million and the company is
geared up to commence cross-borders
money transfer service.
In 2013, MTN was crowned with
the best taxpayer award by Rwanda

India Ltd (OIL) have jointly bought
for $2.475 billion the Videocon’s
10 percent stake in the Rovuma
Area 1. OVL and OIL have together
completed the attainment of
Videocon Group’s 10 percent stake
in a gigantic Mozambique gas
field along with OVL additionally
buying US energy major Anadarko
Petroleum’s 10 percent stake in
the same block for $ 2.64 billion.
According to sources, ONGC
Videsh Ltd have elevated around
$1.5 billion in one-year link loans
from foreign lenders, while OIL
engaged $900 million to stock their
corresponding share of payments
to Videocon. Also, talks are going
on that OVL would increase
another $2.6 billion for the
Anadarko payments. OVL stated,
“OVL and OIL have completed the
acquisition of 10 percent interest
in the Rovuma Area 1 offshore
block, Mozambique, by acquiring
100 percent shares of Videocon
Mozambique Rovuma 1 Ltd, the
company holding the 10 percent
interest in the Area 1, from
Videocon Mauritius Energy Ltd.”
Furthermore, the bought up
stakes will be split in a 60:40
ratio between OVL and OIL. The
agreement by two businesses was

later years?
In literal sense how would one describe Sustainable
Development? It postulates a needed future state
for human cultures in which living conditions and
resource-use meet human needs without weakening
the sustainability of natural systems and the
environment, so that coming peers may also have
their wants met. Sustainable development draws
collective concern for the carrying capacity of natural
systems with the social and commercial challenges
confronted by humanity.
Africa is gifted with rich and varied renewable
and non-renewable natural assets; however its
folks continue to be amongst the poorest in the
world. Refining the well-being of people in Africa
necessitates sustainable development braced with
peace and steadiness, and with human, institutional
and organizational dimensions to accost instant
challenges, such as poverty and ailments.
Since some half a century ago when African
countries in full swing started attaining their political
independence, the landform has confronted several
challenges in its expedition for development. There
has been some degree of accomplishment but to a
great extent, the continent is quiet behind the rest of
the world in advancement.
As I have mentioned earlier, poverty rests as
the notable expansion challenge facing Africa. It
is connected to the environs in multifaceted ways,
chiefly in natural resource-based African economies.
About two-thirds of the populations in African
countries live in rural areas, stemming their main
revenue from agriculture.
Population in Africa are cutting trees for fuel
wood, land-degrading farming systems have been
undertaken, wildlife are being hunted to extinction,
all in a struggle to content today’s demanding living
wants. Awkwardly, these actions have not only
deteriorated the state of the deprived living in Africa
today, but they will also have consequences for
upcoming generations to come.
According to the World Bank, the sub-Saharan
population is rising at the rate of 2.5 percent per
year as compared to 1.2 percent in Latin America
and Asia. At that rate, Africa's population will double
in 30 years. Fast population growth has put a lot of
pressure on Africa’s ecosystems. Glitches such as food
security, land tenure, environ-mental degradation
and the absence of water supply are often related to
high rates of population growth.
In 1992 at the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development, Member States were
called upon to assimilate the extents of sustainable
development into their growth strategies. At the 2002
World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD),
this song was further sung, commending Member
States to speed up their determinations at attaining
sustainable development. Later on, African countries
have incorporated these sustainable development
associated promises.
The maintenance of an environment of peace
and security is consequently one of Africa’s notable
development necessities. Separately from its costs in
human and material terms, battles hinder production,
harm infrastructure, avert the reliable delivery of
social facilities and upset societies. In spite of the
long-standing promises and the stress positioned by
African leaders on the course of regional integration,

Programme (UNEP) describes a green economy
initiative as one that results in “improved human
well-being and social equity, while significantly
reducing environmental risks and ecological
scarcities.”

with policy makers, community groups
and development partners and every
African thriving today!
I trust that if Africa is to come
across these ecological challenges, it
must take action at all levels. It has to

of the world’s trade in goods is conducted
by sea. They connect us all to each other.
And we must harness these connections for
development, not just enrichment.
To achieve sustainable development for all
it is important that we need to think and act
together. We have been thinking separately
and individually for a long time. It is time we
put our narrow differences aside and work
together, because only if we work together,
we can survive together.

THE PROCESS:-
Coffee Cleaning Blending:
The first step is thorough
cleaning and removal of defective
beans, followed by blending of
different types and size to ensure

Roasting Grinding: The
second step is roasting through
either batch or continuous
roasters. Roasted coffee is
reduced by grinding to suitable
size.
Extraction: The third step

an overview of the country having abundant natural resources and his vision to enhance the
booming relationship between Gabon and India.
Gabon is one of Africa’s most
prosperous countries
Excellency, please comment on the
booming relationship between Gabon
and India.
The bilateral relations between
India and Gabon are very cordial at the
moment. The Embassy of Gabon was
established in India in the year 2008 to
show the will of the Republic of Gabon
to intensify the relationship with India.
We have had a lot of interactions with
the Indian public and private sector
and today I am happy to tell you that
there are a good number of Indian
businessmen going to Gabon either
to open some businesses or to settle
down. For your information, as part of
the diversification of our economy, the
government of Gabon has opened a
Special Economic Zone aimed at giving
a value addition to our raw materials.
Accordingly, we are inviting Indian
companies to take advantage of the S E Z
which offers them very attractive terms.
Gabon is among the first 15 African
countries to have implemented the
P an African e- network projects like
Tele-education, Tele- medicine etc.
What further developments have you
made in this sector?
Gabon is one of those countries who
immediately participated in this project
when it was inaugurated in 2009. I do
remember, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee,
P resident of India, during his tenure
as the Foreign Minister interacted with
the African counterparts and among
them was the Gabonese Minister also
as they talked of the ways and means
to develop this project. We have been
trying to take advantage of this asset in
tele- education and tele- medicine. Omar
Bongo University in Gabon has signed an
agreement with Amity University in India.
Also we have gone into a very heavy
project of modernizing our hospitals in
order to equip these hospitals with stateof-the-art technologies.
How attractive is the tourism sector of
Gabon for the Indian investors?
Gabon is a resource-rich country and
the sixth largest oil producer in SubSaharan Africa. It is well endowed with
arable land, forest, and mineral resources.
It has extraordinary biodiversity, as well
as rich deposits of manganese and iron
ore. Gabon has a lot of possibilities that
it is offering to the prospective Indian
investors. We have natural landscape,
flora and fauna which are coupled with
the fact that we are one of these rare
African countries who are set to develop
ecotourism. We have devoted 11% of our
national territory to the creation of 13
natural parks.
Industrialization of Gabon’ is one of
the main objectives of the Gabonese P
resident. What are your views on the
same?
Since taking office in October 2009,

been implementing reforms with a view
to enhancing the business climate to
attract investment.
