Full transcript available here: https://karenmcgrane.com/talks/adapting-ourselves-to-adaptive-content/ For years, we've been telling designers: the web is not print. You can't have pixel-perfect layouts. You can't determine how your site will look in every browser, on every platform, on every device. We taught designers to cede control, think in systems, embrace web standards. So why are we still letting content authors plan for where their content will "live" on a web page? Why do we give in when they demand a WYSIWYG text editor that works "just like Microsoft Word"? Worst of all, why do we waste time and money creating and recreating content instead of planning for content reuse? What worked for the desktop web simply won't work for mobile. As our design and development processes evolve, our content workflow has to keep up. Karen will talk about how we have to adapt to creating more flexible content.

Friends, a zombie apocalypse is upon us: an onslaught of new mobile devices, platforms, and screen sizes, hordes of them descending every day. We're outmatched. There aren't enough designers and developers to battle every platform. There aren't enough editors and writers to populate every screen size. Defeating the zombies will require flexibility and stamina—in our content. We'll have to separate our content from its form, so it can adapt appropriately to different contexts and constraints. We'll have to change our production workflow so we're not just shoveling content from one output to another. And we'll have to enhance our content management tools and interfaces so they're ready for the future. Surviving the zombie apocalypse is possible. In this talk Karen will explain how: by developing a content strategy for mobile.

My talk will cover our process through two different case studies which touch on speculative design, strategy and making, through a series of built and deployed products. The first case study will look at the Drone Aviary project exploring the social, political and cultural potential of drone technology as it enters civil space. It will also examine how we have been communicating the project to different audiences in the form of inventive publications and workshops. And the next case study will look at BuggyAir (part of our bigger Internet of things platform called IOTA) an accurate mobile sensing kit that helps parents understand their children's exposure to air pollution. The title of the talk is from a quote by Richard Feynman it resonates with me because I am making and designing artefacts in the studio that have to be intuitive enough for any audience to understand. But also we find ourselves in the studio trying to work something out; from deciding what flight system to use for a quadcopter, to fabrication techniques. To do this we often ask ourselves, do we really have a real understanding of each step of the process?

My kick-off presentation at IxDA London Meetup October 2015. The subject of the evening was inspired by Russel Davies' post “Software Above the Level of a Single Man” — a provocation with amazingly simplicity but very deep in its implications. The main point we wanted to discuss was the shift as designers from "design for my phone, for my watch, for my [personal context here]" to "design for our car, our home, our office/workplace, our classroom, our [shared space/context here]". Because as soon as you move away from the "level of a single man", you have to deal with (and design for) the complexity of “human interactions”. And it's not only a matter of defining personas, contexts, use cases; but also of understanding relationships, hierarchies, “meanings”, emotions. Are we ready to deal with this change of paradigm? What are the complexities that we have to take into account? Are there already studies, real projects, examples of possible solutions, and what can we learn from them?

In this presentation, experience design expert Evan Gerber will share with you his insight on intersection of teens and mobile web marketing – and how to approach this demographic with a positive, resonant message. He’ll discuss critical success factors, such as the importance of stepping into the mind of a 16-year-old, learning how they talk, and essentially how you can best communicate to them. Evan will share the need for usability testing, and tips on how to make your testing effective and drive valuable results. In addition, this exercise look will provide an understanding of what users expect from their applications, identify common usability mistakes, and recognize emerging design patterns in the mobile Internet.
