WALKING around the 25km square that encompasses the crash site of Flight MH17 there are two
things that hit you -- the flies, and the number of references to this having been a slaughter of
innocents.
Locals say there is always a heavy presence of flies this time of year in Donetsk in Ukraine's agrarian
east, but in certain areas they now swarm as clouds.
They are now an indicator for body retrieval teams that nearby are the remains of some of the 298
passengers and crew, still lying out there after four days in the stifling summer sun.

2. Deep reddish brown smears on upturned airline seats or tangled miles of electrical cable covered in
piles of green and blue bottomed flies point to there being something more beneath.
There's also a stench that clings to you, suffocating. It is distinctive, yet hard to describe, except
perhaps by those who work in the medical profession and experience it every day.
These sites are emotional not just because you know of the lives lost but because of the everyday
items of their lives that when they boarded the flight at Schipol at 12.15pm last Thursday were
important to them.

Scattered about is someone's collection of original 33.3 LP records, all classical from labels now long
gone but preserving the notes of Johan Sebastian Bach, Brahms, Mendelsohn and others. The black
discs are near an Xbox and someone's iPod, a shattered iPad. Then there is a little girl's pair of Hello
Kitty slippers, packets of miniature plastic loom bands and a newly purchased CD box set of Richard
Clayderman.

On the flight there was a large consignment of Ray Ban sunglasses as well as parcelled technical
medical equipment and boxes of IV slain drips.
There was also a tonne of mail bound for Australia, with sacks from Sweden dispatched to homes in
NSW, Queensland and Western Australia as well as a general mail bag for Down Under from the
Netherlands lying among once cherished photographs and keepsake souvenirs.

Amid the maps and flight path charts blowing through the fields was one for landing flight paths for
Adelaide Airport.
MH17 was also apparently transporting birds and animals. We stumbled on an Alsatian German
Shepherd lying in a field under the belting sun while nearby were several exotic birds like mccaws
and parrots; their once-spectacular kaleidoscopic wings crumpled into the Earth.
So many victims, so many stories, lost in a field in Ukraine.
