Guy Fawkes and a group of Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 to kill King James I, who they opposed, by placing 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords. Guy Fawkes was discovered and arrested before he could light the fuse, and he was subsequently hanged. Since then, people in Britain have commemorated Guy Fawkes Day on November 5th with bonfires, effigies of Guy Fawkes, and fireworks to remember the foiled Gunpowder Plot.

4. English catholics were against king James I and they decided to kill him and all his men. They placed 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar just under the House of Lords in the Parliament.

5. Guy Fawkes was discovered when he was going to light the fuse. The King was saved and Fawkes was hanged.

6. For almost 400 years, bonfires have burned on November 5th to remember the failed Gunpowder Plot. Soon, people began placing effigies of Guy Fawkes onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations.

7. Nowadays, C hildren ma k e effigies of Fawkes from old clothes stuffed with newspaper, and display their "Guy" in the streets, asking "Penny for the Guy?" Most of the money they get is used to buy fireworks and sweets.
