MIDDLE
 AGE
Courtly love
• Origin: the late
  11th century by
  the
  troubadours.

• This come from
  the Provence
  (souther
  France)
• AIM:
  Redefine
  traditional
  Christian
  ideals of love,
  marriage,
  manhood,
  virtue,
  feminity.
• Under the
  sponsorship
  of powerful
  nobles like
  Eleonor of
  Aquitaine
  and Marie
  Champagne…
• …their
  influence
  gradually
  spread
  throughout
  France,
  England and
  Germany.
• By the middle of
  the 13th century,
  the troubadour
  philosophy become
  practically
  institutionalized
  throughout the
  courts of Europe,
  and “fine love” had
  become the basis
  for a glamorous and
  exciting new style
  of life.
• Courtly
  love was
  charazteriz
  ed by 5
  main
  attributes.
  In essence,
  the
  relationshi
  p was:
• Aristocratic
  : courtly
  love was
  practiced by
  noble lords
  and ladies.
• Ritualistic:
  The lady was
  the constant
  recipient of
  songs, poems,
  bouquets,
  sweet favours
  and
  ceremonial
  gestures. She
  just need to
  return a short
  of approvald,
  and after all,
  she was the
  exalted
• Secret:
  courtly lovers
  were pledged
  to strict
  secrecy. The
  lovers
  composed a
  universe unto
  themselves.
• Adulterous: “Fine
  love” was
  extramarital.
  Lovers escape
  from the routines
  of noble marriage,
  and exalted their
  carnal
  relationship.
• Literary: as a
  subject and
  theme in
  imaginative
  literature.

The women in the Middle
           Age
• The female
  model beauty
  and the
  situation of
  women in the
  Middle Age
  was very
  different.
• The female
  model beauty:
  beautiful,
  pure, the
  symbol of
  human
  wisdom and
  perfection,
  without men
  couldn¡t
  ascend to
  heaven…
• He have as
  example
  Dante’s
  Beatrice…
• …and
  Petrarch’s
  Laura.
• But the real
  position of
  women in
  Middle Age
  was
  different…
• Because they
  were
  consider
  inferior and
  underestimat
  ed..
… impures and
  behind men…
• …and
  dominated
  by men to
  order women
  to do as they
  wished.
• So the difference
  between the
  beauty model and
  the real women
  was very
  controversial and
  hypocritical.
