2. A Guide to the History of the
Broads
This is of wetlands over 125 miles long.
The Norfolk Broads are a holiday
recreation and a source of fascination for
naturalists all year round.

3. History of the Broads
Created from the 9th and 13th century, by
generations of Norfolk people who dug
peat for heating and cooking purposes.
The Roman mercenaries, Saxon settlers
and Norman conquerors all took what they
needed.
During the 14th century the sea levels
rose, the area flooded, and this natural
accident formed the Broads.

4. A selection of windmills on
The Broads
On the Norfolk Broads you will see a considerable variety of
windmills, which have become a famous part of the landscape.
They were used for grinding corn/flour and also for drainage.
Bircham Windmill: Looks
today as it did over 100 years
ago, at that time over 300
mills ground corn for horse and
cattle feed. It is considered
one of the best still remaining,
and is the only working
windmill in the area open to
the public.

5. Horsey windmill
Built in 1012 to
pump water out from
the surrounding
land. It was
operational until
1943 when it was
struck by lightning.

6. Stow Mill
Was built as a flour
mill in 1826 by
James Gaze. It was
operational until
1930 and then later
turned into a small
home in 1960.

Coarse fishing from 16th
June - 14th March.
Current environmental
agency licence required.
Fish from banks or hire day
boat.
Beam, eel, perch, pike, rud
and tench can be found.
Never discard fishing tackle.
